I guess I read articles mostly aimed at biology or chem students that spent most of their time in the lab. Of course they make generalisations because everyone has a slightly different experience, but mostly I found them relatable. But I think change the hypothesis to fit the results in the case above - it really doesn't matter what the thoughts were initially, as long as the data is robust. That's what we would do in molecular biology anyway, but then we don't really work with rigid hypotheses, it's usually more experimental ie it could be this or that, let's test it to find out, let's see if this works etc.

It might be possible. You need to look at unis and their potential requirements on admission.

I doubt it's that much of a big deal really. There much be loads of other academics you could ask. They don't really need to be in your area either. It only takes a day or two to read a thesis. Your supervisor should be able to call in a favour from someone.

Is it usual to apply for a PhD in Law? What are your intentions afterwards?

These stats are hard to find. I've never seen them. They probably don't exist as there are so many different funding sources. All you can really go on are anecdotal reports e.g. here's my stats: PhD applications 2; PhD interviews 2; PhD success 1. Other people have similar stories, others have applied for 50 or so projects with no success.

Most PhD applicants don't have publications; it's just there in case you do. Just leave the box blank and apply.

Ok, so I had 4 or 5 strands to my molecular biology PhD and I worked on all of these simultaneously. The idea was that if 1 or more of these turned out to be a dead end, I would still have 3 separate date chapters. It worked out that 3 of them got decent results (so I got 3 papers) and 2 of them only had basic info that went into thesis chapters with other data.

Out of these 5 strands, 4 were distinct ie using totally different methods and looking at different areas of biology and 1 used the same methods as another but with a different purpose. 2 out of these 5 took up most of my time, and the others were more long term experiments that ran in the background most of the time.

These projects were all related because they were all working with the same organism.

I think this was a good approach to take, because I too have seen students that basically have to start again with a different project in their third year because their previous projects weren't going to generate any data.

I think the basic plan you describe is probably your best option. I don't see what else you could do? In the US I've seen instances where one spouse is offered a position and negotiates a position for a spouse, but I expect this is probably for later stage career researchers. I think you are going to find one partner is always going to be on the back foot in their career at one stage or another if you want to live together. Look up 'two body problem' for more info.

It might be a bit different for History, but in general the advice is two masters degrees doesn't really help anyone. Your masters grade shouldn't really matter, especially if you have a first. I would just start applying for PhDs if it was me.

Personally the introduction to my thesis, or review of the literature, wasn't particularly critical. It was just the background info to my research. I saved critical review of the literature for my discussion where I just compared the results of other studies with mine. I certainly didn't comment on other people's methods. As far I know most people's theses were like this in my field of molecular biology.

No, some people don't get decent results until their third year. You've got a long way to go yet before you need to start worrying.
