How far to take third postgraduate qualification?

It actually doesn't matter what subjects you have postgraduate qualifications in in order to teach at A-level. You can teach biology with a maths degree for example...

I think with your other masters a PgDip is fine. Generally, extra qualifications won't your future career much if they are equal level.

Finding postdoc opportunities

On the other hand, I've just got an interview for a senior teaching associate and I was told only 10 people applied for the role! So sometimes it's not as competitive as people will have you believe.

But connections are important of course - yesterday someone just randomly asked me if I wanted to apply for their postdoc because the person who was supposed to start has dropped out. I said no because I don't want to, but to her I said it's not in my subject area and it's different techniques used. She said no worries, that can all be taught so apply anyway!

No similar experience but I'm crossing my fingers for you! I also have an interview for a teaching position next week scheduled to be only 30 mins long, so I guess this is the norm. Let us know whether you get it or not!

Yes I think it's probably subject specific - I'm in biology and we don't really do systematic reviews like RLD1984 is describing. I've never heard of this being addressed in a viva for biology.

Multiple projects - is this normal and tips for management!
T

It's pretty normal - I've been juggling projects, papers and thesis amendments for the last two years. On the one hand I quite enjoy it as it keeps me busy, on the other it would be nice to finish something before starting something else, but I don't think it works like that in academia! It's like I finish one paper, then the next one comes back and needs revisions, and then I'm writing a new one as well and all of this on top of my day job.

I just pick certain days and times to work on certain things so I'm not flicking too much between topics.

I think you have to keep working small amounts on each topic so that it all keeps moving along slowly.

I think it should be fine if you put the date when you aim to submit, and your supervisors also say this in their reference letters. Worked for me.

I just put everything in Mendeley and highlighted interesting bits and made notes if needed. For searching articles I just used google scholar or Web of Science.

I definitely never set a certain number of articles to read - I just read what interested me and went from there. Eventually you learn the key papers and people in your field, so you don't need to read everything to find out what's going on.

Any app/software to store (and importantly, tag) copies of notes and papers?
T

Mendeley - just convert everything to a pdf and it's great. Search option is great too.

Look at examples in your department and then write it and ask for feedback from your supervisor.

It's highly unlikely you will be accepted for a funded PhD if you already have one unless it's a totally different field. You can only apply for a postdoc if you already have a PhD.

PhD Acknowledgements

It would be unusual but I think it's fine. I think you can put whatever you want to in the ack and dedication section.

Technically a dissertation would include original research and what you are proposing to do is essentially a literature review. Are you sure this is going to be ok with your uni?

But most of those funded PhDs will only be for EU students though. I'm also confused about what you mean about accepting a postdoc. You don't have a PhD yet so you can't get a postdoc...
