starting a new phd ? need advices

I think switching fields in a postdoc isn't always that easy. Often they ask for specific techniques, so if you haven't done it for your PhD, but someone else has, they are probably going to get the postdoc over you.

PhD interview went bad

And keep your fingers crossed!

Eligibility of EEA/Swiss citizens for UK/EU fundings
T

My guess would be it's an EU universal policy, see http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/documents/studentship-eligibility-pdf/

EEA and Swiss nationals
13. Nationals of a European Economic Area (EEA) member state that is not part of the EU
such as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, together with Swiss nationals are free to
live and work in the UK. However, they are not settled in the UK unless they have
applied for and been granted settled status, and are therefore not eligible for funding.
EEA and Swiss nationals who are resident in the UK may, however, be eligible for full
awards as “EEA migrant workers” (see paragraphs 18-21).

This only applies to funding from certain places though, so if funding is open worldwide you can apply.

New life post-PhD?
T

Yep I know the feeling well. Makes it worse that most of the other PhD students I was close to were international students and have gone back home.

I still have a circle of good friends that I had before the PhD, but I feel we are on different trajectories now, especially as they are all married with kids now like CR1980 said.

I feel less understood I guess. Don't really know what the answer is.

I'm looking for PhD programm in USA.
T

I don't think there's an age limit for applications, but I have a feeling there may be age limits for types of scholarships. I'm not sure how likely it is that a non-US citizen would get US funding.

The Postgraduate Moans Thread
T

I found pretty much everything gets listed on jobs.ac.uk so that's the only place I look now.

If you find something you really want, it's probably best to apply - you might struggle to find something else! If you're successful, you may be able to negotiate start date, or worst case, you can start the job and finish the thesis on evenings and weekends...

The Postgraduate Moans Thread

My supervisor was the opposite, asking me why I was applying for jobs that paid less than the going rate, saying I shouldn't encourage them to reduce salary like that! Then I was the one saying I have bills to pay!

On another note, I've seen quite a few part-time roles advertised in my field. Hope you find something Hugh!

PhD and marriage
T

Your relationship status isn't going to make difference to the PhD program. The only thing that might be affected is a visa application - for example, your husband might need to apply for a dependant's visa, or if you were funded by a government scholarship, there might be extra money for a dependant.

When you do the official paper work, add on there that you are married (if you are by then). If you aren't married by then put single (since that is official status for non-married people whether in relationship or not) or if there are other options you can put 'in relationship' or 'co-habiting' etc.

phd vs master

It's a tough one. Only you can make this decision. Seems like it's a heart verses head type of thing.

Screwed up an interview?

Congrats Escortboy! Well done :)

Question about post-viva job applications
T

Quote From frere_damas:

It's a sad sense of reassurance that the numbers are normal! Getting jobs in the field shouldn't be this hard. =/

Indeed, especially if you've done everything right, i.e. you have publications, conference presentations, networking etc...

Question about post-viva job applications
T

Very good point bewildered.

And try not to be disheartened frere_damas (I should take my own advice haha). I applied for 7 postdocs and got 1 interview (current postdoc). Recently I've been applying for 20 non-academic positions and had 3 unsuccessful interviews and there's 2 interviews still to go. Your numbers are pretty average at the moment.

Question about post-viva job applications
T

I don't have experience in this, but my advice to you is apply anyway. That seems such a small thing for a potential employer to be hung up on. I think if you have the skill set they are looking for and a PhD, they don't really care about the undergrad result.

Feel bullied in Postdoc
T

Take the job and try not to feel guilty about it. It's a fulltime job, nearer to where you live. Of course you should take it!

Post Doctoral Research Opportunities in Australia
T

Quote From Pullo. With a PhD from England, and three journal papers in my CV, what are my chances of getting a faculty positon in an Australian university?

If you're talking permanent job and if Australia is in any way like the UK or US, then I'm guessing close to zero. You need to build up your research portfolio and experience before you can get a faculty position. If by faculty position you mean postdoc (this isn't a faculty position), then I would say you have a good chance if you get three publications. Definitely seek out contacts at the conference.
