Masters Dissertation in 3 months?
T

This is pretty standard though for a taught masters - the research project is generally only 3-4 months long. Students are expected to complete everything from literature review, to research, to analysis to writing up in that time. It's only 13,000 to 20,000 words generally as well.

methods on Poster
T

I wouldn't worry too much about if for a poster because you can explain to the readers what you did face to face.

You can do as suggested by Satchi or you could write 'neutrophils were treated with TNF alpha for 30 to x mins' and then it's still correct for all.

Masters Dissertation in 3 months?
T

I did my masters dissertation in 4 months whilst working 20 hours a week, so yes, it's doable.

I didn't work that hard on mine to be honest and I think I got 67% which wasn't great but was reflective of my efforts so it was fair!

If you think you can do it, you probably know yourself better than your supervisor does so go ahead and do it.

Good luck!

Postdoc Expression of Interest? Some Tips (social sciences)
T

I haven't written my own grant but I know a few people that have.

Generally they found people to sponsor them through their network - they were people their supervisors knew, or they met them at conferences, or they were working in very similar fields so had read each other's work.

To get the grant funded you are going to have to either be an expert in your field, or be working with one. There is also going to need to be some kind of good reason you are choosing to work in that particular lab and with that particular supervisor ie skills or equipment. If it's your first postdoc you are also going to need a couple of high impact papers and research that is a bit cutting edge and with a decent chance of providing an impact.

If, as you say, it is difficult to like you, then it's going to be harder for you. People want to work with people they get along with. Maybe tone down whatever you think people don't like? Put on a different face when you're at work? Not fun, but people do it all the time. If you want a job you are going to have to make people like you, even if it is a fake you.

For me, I expect to get on with my supervisors, it makes work so much more enjoyable. But, you can't force it. I didn't like one of my supervisors from day 1, and it's never changed and it makes it harder. If I had had choices I wouldn't have chosen to work with this person but it was my only option. On the other hand, two of my supervisors I get on brilliantly with, hence they throw opportunities my way so we all benefit.

Is there age limit for PhD?
T

There is not an age limit for admission as far as I know, but some funding bodies may have age limits.

how to title a research
T

You can keep it simple at first - 'investigating rice projects - conception and implementation' and change it when your work is more developed.

I think I would probably only do it if they asked for them, but I don't think it would harm your chances to include them anyway, especially if they are particularly good.

Maths PhD Support and advice
T

I haven't done a Maths PhD specifically, but I just wanted to comment anyway and let you know that your feeling are quite normal for someone starting a PhD (or job).

Try to find other students to connect with in your department through joining clubs or societies or attending social events like coffee or poster sessions or seminars etc. Also maintain your social circle outside of the PhD as best as you can.

Postdoc exemption for graduated more than 5 years
T

What have you been doing since you graduated from your PhD?

I would get exemptions would be something like had a baby, had health problems, had to look after family members etc. Possibly could be decided to get experience in a different type of role before returning to science.

another job application question

Hmm probably depends on the type of job you are applying for. Why would you want to?

Applying for university admin jobs
T

I will have a look into the temping side of things.

I have also seen a generic admin advertisement at my old uni, where it looks like it is recruiting for a bunch of different roles because it doesn't give a specific department and says that there are three rounds of selection (application form, online test, interview) so this different from the other things I have seen. I will have a go at applying for that I think.

Quote From Hugh:

May I ask which software you used? I'm not sure PG researchers have access to it at my uni.

Also, someone said that once you input anything into TurnItIn it remembers it, so if you submit it before the uni does, when uni does it it'll detect it as plagiarism. is that true?

I used Turnitin. At my uni we had an account where we had 5 practice attempts where I think Turnitin doesn't recognise it as an official submission so it doesn't remember it, and then we had the real one for when we were submitting the thesis.

I don't think it would matter though if you submitted it through uni software and the uni found the previous submission, because they don't just rely on the % score it gives back, they investigate the findings (although this is done by the admin team so not sure how effective this is!).

When it finds some plagiarism from a university, all it says is 'student assignment submitted to x university', so if this was your own university and the % score was 80-100%, I don't think it's a problem because obviously it would be your own work because unless you copied someone else's thesis you wouldn't be able to get a score that high.

I'm not sure what would happen if say you borrowed someone else's software and uploaded your thesis and then upon submission the uni ran your thesis through the software as well, because it would obviously detect it and it would look suspicious.

I think my score was around 10% which is pretty normal. My friend's was 25% and he was still fine.

Turnitin student Account Creation
T

There's nothing you can do then, it's a not a free service, if your university doesn't pay for it then you will have to if you want to use it.

I've used track changes for editing other things but not when editing my thesis. As I was the one making the changes I guess I didn't see the point. But like you, I kept previous versions of each chapter.

It's a good idea to put your thesis through plagiarism software. It's mandatory upon submission at my uni anyway, but it's nice to know if there are going to be issues beforehand.

It's really easy - all you do is submit the word file and it does the rest. It gives you a % plagiarised score and highlights the problem areas and shows the source material. Then you just have to go and paraphrase these areas and hey presto, no more detectable plagiarism.
