Postgrad routes into teaching

I would only take it if it allows for me to be based in a certain area - that's the reason I'm looking for a new job in the first place.

Thanks, yes I would definitely be interested in research benefits it offers so I think that one is looking the best for me so far.

Yes I think maybe with Researchers in Schools it's £16k for Biology outside of London with no fees and then maybe £20k tax free bursary for other teaching routes but I would have to pay fees?

Anyone have any experience with applying for teacher training with a PhD?

I find the amount of information quite confusing.

I think I can apply for Researchers in Schools and get a £20k bursary, but then I get confused if this bursary is for this or for another program... but what are other good options? Maybe Teach First?

Any advice welcome.

Job Interview Experiences - Please share yours Advice/support

My interview questions were along the lines of:

What transferable skills have you gained from past employment?
What makes a good team player?
What considerations are there when working in a small office environment?
What do you know about this university/department?
What do you know about this subject?
What do you think about our website?
What do you think your training needs will be for this post?
How comfortable are you with analysis of big data sets?

But... I don't think I got the job because they said they would let me know on Monday and they still haven't so... I hate the waiting game :(

When do you get your thesis professionally proof read?

Quote From Thesisfun:
You shouldn't make any changes once corrections have been accepted.

Sure, no material changes, but I think it's fine to correct typos or insert a word where its been missed. Plus, no-one is going know anyway...

Actually I mean before you print the final version, so after your viva and then after your corrections have been signed off. If you do it before the viva, you may have a lot of revisions to make and it's easy to introduce new mistakes when you are making your corrections.

How long is your literature review?
T

Think mine was only 8000 but I had quite long chapter intros.

I never did, but if I did, I would probably do it before I printed the hard bound copy.

New York University vs Boston University (for Electrical Engineering)

Hi, most of us on here are studying in the UK so you may not get much of a response.

What would you do? (PhD admissions)
T

Well I'm in science so not really familiar with ESRC, but I assume it's similar to BBSRC. I don't think being funded by BBSRC confers much advantage in science, so not sure if would be similar for ESRC?

Often younger lecturers push more for publications and have more time to spend with students so can be a positive.

I would still go with A regardless, sounds like that's the one you really want. You can have the best sounding PhD on paper, but if you hated it, what's the point? It's really really hard to be enthusiastic about a project that you are only half interested in, in a place you don't particularly like to be. Trust me.

Scientific copy editor interview
T

So I have an interview for a copy editor at a journal on Monday.

Anyone ever had a similar interview? Got any advice or info on what to expect? Do you think there will be questions on the subject area of the journal (it's about a particular disease) or more so on the editing side of things?

I've already done a test editing piece and passed that.

Really really want this job!

How to gain teaching experience in higher education?
T

That pretty much sums it up, yep!

Student often get put on zero hours contracts when they start their PhD. Try emailing the admin dept and seeing what they advise and whether they will take on external candidates under the same conditions (but I doubt it).

Phd scholarship

I think generally the supervisor chooses the candidate and then it goes to panel, so the panel is choosing both the student and the project.
