Terms of PhD in the UK with a Dr. phil.
T

Ok I understand the difference better now.

I still don't think you will be able to use your thesis material for a PhD in the UK. It doesn't work like that. You are supposed to be doing research for ~3 years full time. Your supervisor expects to work with you on this, not receive a subset of something you have already done.

You can do a completely different subject or topic for a PhD though.

Some people do a PhD by publication, where you do just submit articles and then top and tail the thesis with an intro and discussion. These are rarer though, and usually reserved for academics who have had a longish career but didn't have a PhD initially. This may be an option for you if you have publications like this.

Job specification - Advice!

I'm not quite sure what you mean? What type of jobs are you applying for? I didn't come across that sort of thing in my postdoc applications.

First Year Change of Research Topic
T

This is a difficult one, I don't really have any advice to offer... I guess if it was me I would probably speak to the new supervisor first and take it from there.

Isn't there a chance you could finish your PhD with your current supervisor, and then do a postdoc with the other one?

But how is a PhD different from a Dr. Phil, when PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy?? Seems like the same thing to me?

You won't be able to translate your German thesis into English and then submit this for a PhD in the UK. A thesis is supposed to be an original piece of work.

To answer your other questions, even though they are probably moot now, you can do a PhD with your background, the minimum duration after which you can submit for a PhD is usually 2.75 years after enrolment.

Your current supervisor could not be part of your examination team because the examiner is supposed to be someone independent.

I think you need to rethink your options.

What kind of jobs could I get in the UK with the following qualifications?
T

In science or out of science?

In science, probably any molecular biology technician or research assistant role.

Outside of science, any type of job where you need to work your way up the ladder, starting not quite at the bottom depending on other experience you have.

Best programmes for academic poster?

I use powerpoint (1 slide), but you have to change the slide settings to A0 size (or whatever size you will be printing in) because otherwise the resolution is poor.

Potential postdoc versus potential lectureship

Yep, go for the interview, and then turn it down if you need to! Good luck Grumpy!

Just share my feelings coz there is no one i can talk to

That's great news! Very pleased for you :)

Credit transfer between Universities Credit Accumulation System in the UK
T

I'm not sure whether you can transfer credits between UK universities?

You probably need to complete all the credits for the masters at that uni.

If can transfer credits, I don't think it would affect your PgDip.

You need to check with both unis.

Changing your referee after submitting an application form - can you do it?
T

Don't worry. They may not even contact your referees. I'm not convinced my PhD supervisors contacted mine - I hadn't spoken to them for 5 years but they told me at the interview they had contacted them...

They couldn't have got hold of my previous work referees either, since they had left the company.

If they do attempt to contact them, and they can't, I expect that they will ask you about it and give you the chance to explain or give another referee. Also, your referee may respond regardless of being off work, or may contact you and tell you they can't provide the reference.

So, my advice is to do nothing, or you could contact your referee yourself and ask them to notify you if they get asked for a reference?

Also, for my postdoc, they emailed my referees on the same day as tell me I got the interview, so maybe they have already contacted your referees...

Master thesis grade

Especially as the percentage of people that get 1st is 20-30%, dependent upon subject.

PhD viva result: any different between major amendment and R&R

Quote From Jerry2015:
No information was available to me when I started my PhD at all.

I'm sure your university has online guidelines regarding this, or you could have asked your colleagues, or your supervisors, or someone in your department, or googled it and see what happens at other unis.

Have you heard of the free online courses called MOOCs?
T

Agreed HazyJane, I think most people on here will have heard of them...

Personally, I don't think they live up to the hype. There is no replacement for actually attending university. Plus, I prefer to read to learn; watching videos about something is too slow for me.

Journal papers from PhD
T

I used some text from my thesis in my papers and vice versa. I didn't cite my papers in my thesis, but I just included the published one as an appendix.

I did find that the angles I used in my papers were different from my thesis so I ended up rewriting things a bit anyway.

The experience varies by uni. I can see that at my uni, the resubmission fee is £600 but I doubt they enforce it. I guess at your uni, the policy is for the resubmitting student to pay the whole year fee, seems outrageous, but then again, this information would have been available to you when you started the PhD.

Anyway, you want the PhD, so you are going to have to pay the money, and wait for the outcome.
