weirdest question yet... how do you learn on PhD?
T

I learnt a lot by writing. I had to do two 3000 word lit reviews in my first 3 months and that really helped me. Then writing annual reports helped a lot, and finally I learnt the most in the last year when I actually sat down and wrote the thesis! (Biology)

Approximate requirements for Post-Doc position
T

That's it really - publications and experience in the techniques required for the specific postdoc you apply to. If you have teaching experience and grant writing experience, even better.

PhD Loan
T

For what subject? It's not generally a good idea to get a loan for a PhD...

being a postdoc for a long time

Without publications, getting a good job in a lab is going to be very difficult. Can you write some review papers? Do some experiments on the side? Get a lot of conference papers?

What about just taking a job in any lab?

Changing University at the end of PhD in protest

Un-feasible and crazy

Viva done!

Thanks for posting this Tulip - it always amazes me the different corrections that people get at the whim of an examiner. Who really cares about the format of graphs!? Like that makes any difference to the science! Anyway, good luck with finishing your corrections. I'm graduating next week and I can't wait :)

Inconsolable - Failed PhD after R&R
T

I'm so sorry to hear this. How did they manage to make a mistake like that? I hope they have made another mistake and you have been awarded the PhD. I guess your internal has confirmed the outcome though?

I don't have any advice for you really. Maybe you can dispute the outcome once you have received the final reports? It just seems so unfair.

Corrections Question

I'm guessing it means it's not on the same place on the page as other footnote markers??

Postdoc offer...what should I do?
T

Quote From Hugh:

I would tell the people that have offered you the job if they could give you an extra week to decide?

Sometimes it's difficult though because they want a quick answer.

You can accept the first offer and then reject it later on - this isn't great but at the end of the day it's your life and a job is only a small part of it. I would worry more about what you want than what your potential employer wants...

I wouldn't email the second lab because if they are still choosing between candidates, you may push them away from selecting you and into selecting someone that they think may accept their offer.

about PhD confirmation paper
T

I imagine it's not standardised and varies by institution. Can you contact someone at the graduate office?

Lets talk about funding!
T

You are going to struggle to find funding for a science program as an international student. I suggest you look to your government for funding. UK students that are funded in science get their funding from their university or other funding body and the PhD will be advertised as funded at the time. Retrospective science funding is practically unheard of.

Which program to choose ?
T

I doubt many people on here can offer you such specific advice regarding these universities and courses.

Application anxiety and advice
T

I'm not sure whether you will get many replied specifically about immunology PhDs, but there should be previous threads on here regarding interview questions and do's and don'ts.

Good luck with your interview!

External Supervisors?
T

I had four supervisors, two of which were external. The external ones had very limited input and one wasn't interested at all.

I think that had they been my main supervisors though, they would have had more input and I could have arranged meetings etc with them if needed.

Can I mention my scholarship on an academic poster?
T

Yes, in many cases, the logo is all the acknowledgement of sponsorship that is on the poster.
