Applying for postdoc overseas with new baby
T

Love the precision on age...I guess 28.5 years, rather than 28 or 29, makes a difference!

I'm currently doing a postdoc in the UK.

It's fairly easy to get a postdoc if you have a good reference, come from a good uni, have well-known supervisors, have publications, have a good attitude and have the expertise they specify.

If a postdoc is advertised, they already have the funding, so you can get paid from the start date.

They can't discriminate on the basis of family status, and to be honest, most academics are very encouraging towards postdocs wanting families and working conditions are pretty flexible.

Notice of Retraction

Quote From huhu:
My paper in a conference was retracted. When I search deeper, the whole proceedings (1 volume) of the conference was retrated. There are 2 pages of the list of authors who presented papers in that conference and their papers are also retracted. The conference was in 2010 and organized by xxxxx. When I search about xxxxx, it is written that the body organized fake bogus conference. How come it is a fake conference when we get reviewer comments, presented the paper and paid the registration fee?

So you attended the conference, and yet it turns out to be fake? That doesn't make sense. I thought scam conferences were just to take people's money, but there is no actual conference?

Is this vaguely normal a week before viva, and if so what the heck do I do about it?!?
T

What areas are your examiners familiar with? That's the area they will focus on - they are unlikely to ask questions on areas they don't understand.

They didn't me about things I didn't write about in my viva (sciences).

I think it's normal to reread things and think they are obvious - they are now, to you, and that's the way it should be.

Good luck!

To submit or to extend (unusual case)
T

It's very difficult for us to answer these questions because we don't know your thesis and we don't whether your supervisor's suggestions are really necessary or just their preference. Neither you or you supervisors can say whether the examiners will ask for these corrections, or whether they will give you other corrections.

One of my international friends in the same situation and she has been told to submit the thesis (to enable her submit on time and before her visa expires), even though the thesis isn't great, and the hope is that she will pass with minor/major/r&r.

Submitting when your supervisors advise against it is generally a bad idea.

It's probably better to submit, go home, and come back for the viva, if that's possible?

PhD with a 2.2 but recently diagnosed with a neurological disorder
T

I doubt they will consider lower scores due to your condition, but you could ask the admin dept. Often they just specify an MSc so you may be ok anyway.

Can I refer to illustrations in footnotes?
T

I don't think it's usual to put figures in the footnotes.

The odd retracted paper won't make much difference, unless it's sufficiently high profile to gain widespread notoriety or it's to do with deliberately misrepresenting data.

Haven't done a parttime PhD myself, but I estimate between 6 and 8 years...

Cancelled Master in Norway - Postgraduate Diploma?
T

I don't think that will be possible. You need to do the work at the awarding institution.

How long did it take you to write up and submit?

Quote From glowworm:

Supervisors checked each chapter and then I sent them a full final version to check for smaller snags before sub.

Same.

How long did it take you to write up and submit?
T

It's difficult to say because many people (like me) had to finish experiments and write simultaneously. I would say allowing 1 month per chapter is enough time to go from zero to finished - so six months in total. I formatted as I wrote so that didn't take any time.

Viva done!

Congrats Dr Tulip!

Change of entrance semester

I'm not sure for Germany but I know in the UK it's usually not a problem to delay the start, unless you leave it until the last minute. I doubt you have to give much of a reason. If you haven't accepted it yet, you could always say you accept it and want to start later.

Viva tomorrow!
T

Congratulations Dr Caro and Dr Cherub!

In house guidelines for journal article submission
T

Yes if they explicitly state that I think you should follow it. But either way they don't worry about minor formatting things like that, as long as you have followed most of the guidelines. If accepted they will edit that stuff later.
