Help required for preparing a research proposal in Plant Sciences

I think you need to be more specific on what advice you want.

Advice before choosing to do Science MRes/PhD
T

When you say you want to work in research, what exactly do you mean?

Do you want to work in a lab, for example as a technician? Or do you intend to do a PhD at some point?

To be honest, there are so many PhD qualified people that want a job in research, it's hard for you to compete with them for research positions with only an undergrad degree.

I wouldn't worry about getting research experience (you've already got some) and you can network and get contacts whilst doing a MSc. It will be harder for you to do this anyway without a MSc because if you are just doing work in a lab you won't be going to conferences or presenting your work anywhere so it's not really much advantage to you.

If you have to wait to start a MSc, then carry on trying to get lab experience if you want, but it won't harm you if you get a non-science job either (coming from someone who took a 5 year break between MSc and PhD and now works as a postdoc).

Postgraduate Masters Loans - Big Updates

Yes that's much better. For £10k you can fund a research masters and cover living costs.

Good that the age cap has been raised too.

Missing transcript for PhD application
T

I don't think it will be too much a problem - I expect other unis would act the same way as you, and not just dismiss you because you can't get a copy of the transcript.

Maybe you could get a letter from the uni saying they have lost the records? That might help.

Where to do a PhD
T

For computer-based PhDs it's not usually a requirement to spend time at the university (actually for any PhD it's up to you most of the time).

But, there are several people on here that live far from their uni and I expect they would tell you it does make it more difficult. Supervisors can be hard to get hold of sometimes if you can't pop into their office and you lose some of the 'experience' of a PhD by living far away. PhDs can be lonely and difficult at times too, and it really helps to have the support of your research group.

PhD or Job

Quote From Fled:
Those without publications get temporary teaching posts, those with publications get full time research offers, often before they have even submitted.

Yep, exactly what happened to the last 5 or people that left my lab!

Not heard back after postdoc application, should I email the PI?

haha congrats!

Not heard back after postdoc application, should I email the PI?

Quote From HazyJane:
In the UK, referees are not normally contacted for references unless an offer is made.

For my postdoc, the day I got an offer for the interview was they same day they contacted my supervisor for a reference.

I think as you have had a chat with the PI already, it's ok to drop a casual email and ask. Otherwise I would say emailing the admin is the better approach.

PhD Research Topic HELP!
T

It works ok if copy and paste.

I haven't read it, but first off I would say change the typeface - stick to the obvious ones Arial/Times New Roman/Calibri etc

Also, I think it looks quite long. It's not my field so can't be of much help.

PhD or Job
T

It really depends on how much you want a PhD. It sounds like that job offer would be a great opportunity. And you're correct, the chance of getting an academic job is almost non-existent and will probably pay far less as well.

Funding for conference attendance in social sciences UK
T

Are you a member of any scientific societies? They are good funding source for conferences. You can usually get from £300 to 1/2 your conference costs, so you need to be members of at least a couple if it is an expensive conference, and usually you need to be presenting a talk or a poster.

My PhD is moving to a field I do not like so much and I am trying to change route
T

Yep, you're right, my advice is to push your supervisor to let you work in the area that you want to.

Maybe if there's something small you can work on and show him, so that he knows that you can do it?

Also, try to think about the reasons that he may want you to only work on the code and think how this can be overcome?

R+R but no second viva?
T

Sorry to hear about your viva result MrDoctor. It's really difficult when the examiners say one thing and do another. If they think it will take 2-4 months, then why don't they give you major revisions, so you can get 6 months, rather than 12 months R&R? It doesn't make sense to me.

I think you can say that you have passed, because you don't need another viva, but it is possible that you submit the revisions and more might be required (I know that's happened to at least one person on this forum).

As for graduating in July, you will probably need your corrections signed off first. This is different in the case of minor corrections, where my uni states students can graduate even if they haven't finished them, but for major corrections or R&R, they have to wait until their corrections have been signed off.

I don't know how you should state this on your CV when applying for jobs. Maybe say that you have R&R and are working through the corrections? Maybe check with your supervisor. Someone else on here might be able to say how they approached it on their CV.

At least you don't need another viva, and they thought your performance was excellent. This is an achievement in itself, even if it doesn't feel like it now, so well done!

I PASSED!!!!!!!!!

Well done DrEmmaki! Very happy for you!
