Accomodation in Sheffield
T

Quote From windowsill:
as a german you'll notice most of the accommodation will be not the quality you're used to. you might want to check for double glazing, damp and somesuch. avoid sash windows. some britishers think it's totally normal to have 15 degrees inside your house during winter.

Yes the joys of cheap student properties. Yes I'm experiencing it now, and no, I don't think it's normal and I don't think any other 'Britishers' think so either! Students don't have to put up with poorly insulated properties with ineffective heating systems - you get what you pay for. If I had to live in student properties the rest of my life... well, that's one incentive to get a well paying job isn't it!

But for now? Yes, gotta put up with it unless I want to get a parttime job so I can afford a better place.

1. Most postgrads are in private renting.

I think that the advantage of dorms is that you can secure the accommodation easily and it's probably close to uni.

Yes you can find somewhere by applying from outside UK, or you could just book viewings then make a weekend trip to view the properties and then pay the deposit to secure it if you find one you like (if living alone) or contact the uni and see if they can ask around your dept for a place to share?

2. That would be nice to have meals served 24/7! No, it means get your own...

3. Rent obviously depends on so many things. As a rough guide on sharing a place, you're looking at £300 to 600 bills included. Most PhD students live very well on their stipend. It's more than enough.

4. Free! Got to love the NHS :) Just register with a doctors surgery when you arrive

PS - check your uni website because they will have most of the info on there.

Viva in 3 days - spotting lots of errors

I agree with Eds. These things are really minor. I also had some of these mistakes and the examiners noticed some, but not all. Don't tell them unless you have to!

Major corrections in 9 months

It's so difficult to say. Hopefully there will be some kind of dialogue and if more needs doing they will let you know? It does sound like you've done a lot.

I got minor corrections, which they said were substantial, but it only took a week max for me to do, so to me they are small, basic things. I think they overestimate the time needed, which makes you think you need to do more than you need to do. Having said that, I am waiting for the internal to sign off my corrections, so who knows, maybe he will say they are not enough!

I do not know exminers before Ph.D submission.

I like this rule: "Supervisors are required to consult with their students...the names of suggested examiners". I wish my supervisors had followed it!

And this: "For instance, there is now research to suggest that experienced (rather than inexperienced) examiners will be more likely to see the thesis within the context of the research education experience, i.e. the equivalent of 3-4 years work, not a 'Nobel Prize'." My external should have made note of that!

I think it totally depends on which examiner you get. My examiner wasn't really related to my work so there was no way I could have included his papers anyway.

But I wouldn't worry about this anyway - worst case they will just tell you to add a few of their papers as a correction.

Thesis Chapters and Publications

I see, it's quite different in your case then. I don't think you would have an issue with plagiarism, because surely the whole point of a thesis like that is to avoid you having to write the same thing twice? I think you need to check with your supervisor, other students in your dept and your university guidelines.

This is totally normal. I knew my internal, but not my external upon submission. Why would you want to complain?

Thesis Chapters and Publications
T

My PhD was also in the Sciences. I have one paper published so far. The data in my thesis is exactly the same as the data in the paper, but it's spread over different chapters in the thesis. Some of the intro and discussion is identical to that in the thesis, and my uni said this was fine. If your uni says this is plagiarism, then just keep the data the same and reword all the other sections of the paper.

So in essence, yes, the thesis is more detailed, and it's also more chronological, telling a story, whereas the paper is more 'here are the facts'. For example, in the thesis I would have things like PCR gel images, maybe sequencing results, more explanation of what things are, I would explain difficulties I encountered, whereas in the paper it shows the final result.

I put a copy of the paper in an appendix of my thesis.

It's always good to have an acknowledgements slide. Good luck!

R&R to Rejection (Paper)
T

It's probably different in social sciences, but in sciences if a paper is rejected we just submit somewhere else, usually a lower ranking journal.

I would make the changes and resubmit elsewhere if it was me.

Getting permission/high-res versions for journal article images
T

The journal I submitted my paper to wanted a 300 dpi image, but mine was only about 90 dpi and they accepted it, but I guess that depends on the journal.

My supervisors said just to submit it with the images as they were as the journal will look at that detail later (if it is accepted by the reviewers).

Advice needed...
T

Honestly, yes you are being a bit unreasonable. Your supervisor doesn't really have to tell you anything (but usually they do, especially if you are expected to train the new students).

Just ask what your responsibilities will be for the new students, and explain your concerns. I've trained lots of new students, and I don't find it takes up that much time to be honest, but then again it's something I enjoy so that probably makes it easier for me.

Academic Visitor UK
T

You need to contact the Home Office and ask them I think, to ensure you get the correct answer. You are right though, you won't need a student visa, because you are coming as an academic visitor.
