Journal submission error

I don't think it will be rejected for that reason. If the reviewers notice it they will just put it as feedback.

You can change it when it gets accepted.

Post-submission finances
T

I wasn't funded during my 4th year, so I just did as much departmental work as I could during my write up (and there was nothing my supervisors could do about it because otherwise I would need to get a full time job and that would leave less time for the thesis), and then I had a job that started as soon as I submitted.

If you're funded during your write up, I think you can just get a job or do departmental work post submission; evenings and weekends will be sufficient for viva prep.

But if you want to do departmental work during your write up, try to explain this again to your supervisors.

The Postgraduate Moans Thread

People that like to keep offices at 15C... it shouldn't be everyone else's problem if you're feeling hot!

MA in History challenges - too high or too low ?

No experience with history MA but I would go with:

A) no
B) person-dependant
c) Yes, yes, 65%
d) person-dependant
e) check with uni

Failed 1st year viva...I seriously need some advice
T

Yes it's the same everywhere unfortunately. People at my university have had 3 hour 1st year vivas where they are grilled on every little detail because the examiner knows their work inside out and then other people (like me) have a 1 hour viva where the examiners have no idea about the work and just nod at whatever is said. Neither strategy is particularly helpful.

Anyway, glad you're giving it another go!

Tips for (re)writing the same methodology
T

I have had the same issue with my papers. I just try to write it from memory and then hope it turns out differently and then paraphrase the sections that don't. I also try to look at different papers with similar methods to get some ideas of how to restructure mine.

Threats from supervisor
T

Isn't it illegal to make recordings of someone without their knowledge? I don't think that is going to be the most effective solution.

Why would he threaten you? And why don't you want to follow his advice?

How glad are you that the PhD thesis is not graded?
T

People don't mention it, so I guess in that way it's not graded. Just street cred within your own department if you get no corrections!

How glad are you that the PhD thesis is not graded?
T

Well, is pass with no corrections/minor corrections/major corrections/revise and resubmit/MPhil not a kind of grading system?

But yes, I dread to think what my grade in my viva would have been if there were categories within minor corrections!

Applying for phd studentship with no msc?
T

Apply anyway, what have you got to lose?

Failed 1st year viva...I seriously need some advice
T

I agree with Eds. Try again with the PhD. Remember, you failed your viva on the whim of a couple of examiners - other examiners might have felt differently.

Third class admission and funding chances
T

Admission into what? Either a MSc or PhD will be difficult. It's not impossible, but you better have a good reason as you why you have a 3rd and be able to evidence that you can do better.

corrections misery

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your situation. You will be able to do your revisions whilst working fulltime, it just takes a lot of sacrifice and discipline. You have to find out what works for you. For me, I find it easier to finish work between 5-6pm, have dinner that I prepared previously, and then stay working until 9 or 10pm. I find if I go home I won't do any work.

I don't think you will be able to transfer your work to another university.

Writing a prospective PhD Proposal
T

Have you got your own funding? It can be difficult in science to get funding for PhD projects because a lot of the time they are funded by grant applications written by the PIs for specific projects.

Your best bet is to contact PIs that seem to have a lot of money (they are publishing a lot and using the latest techniques) and are sort of working in your area and hope that they have a small pot of money that they could use to fund you.

Resubmitting Years On

Sorry to hear about your experiences. The likelihood that another university will admit you is remote and yes the uni is likely to have IP rights to the data. Can you contact your old uni and see if anything can be salvaged?
