Why are you doing a PhD?
T

Cos I want to be like my hero.. 'Dr' Gillian McKeith ;-)

Seriously though.. I did it for career progression, lots of jobs that I liked the sound of required a PhD or research experience so I decided to do a PhD.

then there is a bit of me that wants wants the Dr before my name :o)

How does your department treat you?
T

I feel that I am more or less treated like a member of staff.. All the PhD students have their own desk/computer and we have unlimited access to photocopying and printing etc. I am not expected to do 'chores' for other people in the group and I would be quite comfortable saying no if someone pulled the 'but you're the student' card. There are a couple of people in my group who like tobring up the fact i'm a student but i think the reason is mainly because these people had it tough when they were a student so they have a case of poacher turned gamekeeper. I am at a research institute rather than a university so things are probably a bit different here.

how formal are you with your supervisors?
T

I get on well with my main supervisor and he is fairly informal/laid back.. I live down the road from him and he sometimes gives me a lift to and from the lab.. I have his home number etc.. but I would feel a bit strange ringing him at home. My group is fairly friendly so we often all go for coffee together including my supervisor. My industrial supervisors/advisors are all fairly laid back too.. one of them was inthe year above me during my undergrad so I know him fairly well and we often go out for beer.
