Overview of Tricky on PostgraduateForum.com

I'm in biological sciences not social sciences but..

1) As far as I am aware I have no say in my examiners.. I'm not even supposed to suggest people. My supervisory commitee will organise them

2) I have a scheduled meeting with my main supervisor every 2 weeks and then have meetings with my supervisory commitee about twice a year. But then I can contact any of them on an ad hoc basis if i need to. I am good friends with one of my sup commitee as we went to the same uni so we meet up regularly and sometimes talk shop and it can be nice to be able to have an informal chat about things.

Doing a PhD, does it make you ugly?

Your post is a bit vague. Firstly what is your research area? Are you a UK/EU student? Where are you studying?

You can get bank loans, funds from research councils and cash for other sources dependant on your situation. Simply typing 'Postgraduate funding' into google will give you links for information on obtaining funding.

I know the feeling! I hate the fact I have grey hairs and have put on a bit of weight since starting my PhD.

I think the whole 'aging' process is made more apparent when you are doing a PhD due to the large number of fresh faced 18-21 year olds running around campus!

Best thing you can do is to go and speak to your supervisor first, ask him about the project and about the other student who wanted to take it from you. You wont gain anything by saying nothing and silently seething about it, while at the same time having it out with the student in question first could result in a slanging match if you are all wound up about it.

So speak to your supervisor and then see what s/he says about it and then after that talk to the other student.
