wordy types - can you explain this?
T

I have dabbled in carpentry and such like and using 'X off' to refer to quantity is not an error. It originates from foundry when products were cast off a mould so you would get '20 off that pattern and 30 off that pattern'. If something is unique it is a one-off which refers originally to a prototype and the original mould just being made from sand which was cheaper than producing a more substantial mould for something that could have potentially been crap, so the mould being made out of sand was only used once i.e. One-off. Subsequently we get the phrase 'they broke the mould with him' referring to someone who is very unique or a one-off

I've often wondered if perhaps the voting for our choice of entry is fixed and the powers that be choose a really crap song so that we don't win and therefore don't have to host the event.. It would no doubt cost us a fortune (and most likely the venue wouldn't be ready on time hehe)

Funding for external course.
T

If the course is related to your PhD and could class as a transferable skill then perhaps you can get your uni to pay out of its training budget (if it has one!) or if you are funded by someone like the BBSRC then you could get funding from the roberts fund it might be worth speaking to your grad studies office.

Importance of location for PhD
T

Well I think that the PhD itself played more of a part.. as I think its much more important to be doing a project that interests you the most. Obviously if you have a huge dislike for a particular city or country then it would be best to avoid them as it could just add an extra stress factor. However, from my experience its not that hard to fit into a new city. For my undergrad I went from the deep dark yorkshire dales to London which was a huge culutre shock but I soon adapted. For my phd I came to a new city, somewhere I would never have thought about moving too and I really enjoy it here..

Not quite sure what you are asking.. but obviously if you have a first and are taking extra subjects then you will have a good chance.. The best course of action would probably be to talk to the graduate admissions office
