Phd's at Research Centres versus Uni's
T

I am at a research institute like Rothamsted and I enjoy it here. Like the other guys have mentioned you are set away from the 'uni-lifestyle' but that has its upsides as I feel I get treated more as a colleague rather than a PhD student. From what my friends at unis have said its easier for me to get hold of equipment and the like

I agree with sylvester.. another thing to make sure is that you come across as an enthusiastic person as they want you to have lots of enthusiasm to carry you through the tough bits!

Out of interest what is the field?

Anyone else got a runny nose?

I was a bit daunted by my interview here as I had applied for a couple of projects and ended up with 5 interviewers but it went OK.. Basically have a good idea of the project you are wanting to work on and the techniques involved.. If you have any questions on L. lactis feel free to ask and I can find out for you as I know the people in the group. Other than that have a clear motivation for why you want to do a PhD and be enthusiastic. Claire Shearman is a nice woman on a day to day basis so I don't see why she wouldn't be in an interview. Do you know who else is interviewing you?

Hey I am at the IFR too.. I know Clare Sherman she is one of the leaders in my research group.. Its a nice little community there and the people in the group are nice :o)

I have been at the IFR since october and I am enjoying it.. Norwich is not a bad place to live.. I won't repeat what was said by Shellyanne as my interview etc was the same format..

how long can it take?!?!
T

Hehe one of my housemates is in the shower for ages.. once I cooked, eat and cleaned up after my evening meal and she was still in there when i finished!

how to make a good impression?
T

In my experience one of the most important things is to come across as very enthusiastic..
Knowledgewise, don't worry about revising the entire subject, I think all you really need to do is make sure you are familiar with any techniques and ideas mentioned in the description..
Be prepared to answer questions like 'Why are you interested in this subject?' 'What do you enjoy about it?' 'Why do you want to do a PhD?'. There are no right or wrong answers but the supervisors wont be impressed if u can't answer them. One other thing I got asked a few times was what I planned on doing in the future and how i felt a PhD would help me to reach my goal.. Oh and have some questions to ask them that always goes down well
