Something someone said to me when I said I was going back to uni to do a PhD was 'So you can't hack it in the real world then?'

That really p*ssed me off!!

Like in previous comments, I don't think that anyone will understand what it is like unless they do one themselves of have close contact with a friend/relative/partner who is doing a PhD.

If you like fantasy fiction then try 'The Chronicles of The Raven' by James Barclay. He has a very fast paced and gritty writing style, I really enjoyed them.

Mmm well for me location was an issue as I didn't want to be a million miles from my family and my other half.. Plus there are parts of the country I didn't want to be in.. But at the same time I did want to come somewhere new, as I enjoy getting to know a new city. Then of course there was the reputation of the place, I didn't want to go to a crap uni.

But ultimately it the project was the most important factor, as I wanted to make sure I was doing a project that I had alot of interest in otherwise you could end up in a place u love but doing something you hate.

Bazzab you can edit the format for 'Jones (2006)' by simply right clicking on the reference you want to change, select 'edit citation' then tick the 'exclude author' box which will then just give you the year in brackets and you can write the authors name before the brackets.

With my application forms and interviews when asked about other applications I told them the truth that I had applied to other places. I think this is a good idea as it shows that you are serious about getting a PhD plus one guy I spoke too liked that I had been looking at similar project as it showed that I had a good interest in the subject area.

However I did apply for a quite a few so I didn't list every single one I just mentioned a couple of the ones that I had most recently applied for.

There's nothing to be ashamed of.. I am sure around 50% of the people here are male..
