Please dont quit on the account of this presentation. with time you will get better and besides the point i have been at presentations where "big names" found it hard to answer questions. My topic relates to international development and i am always at the ODI and other places where they deliver related talks and you find that even ministers and various authors struggle to answer people's questions and because they are so used to giving these talks, they just find something to say even if it doesnt address the questions asked. I agree with what Away is saying, give yourself a chance to improve.

i would say a part time job is a good idea as it allows you to come away from the Phd from time to time but then it depends on what kind of a job it is and how demanding it is. I teach 3 classes and i find the money is not worth my time though i enjoy it. i would be happy to teach less hours with more dosh! if i had the dosh i need to get by i would only teach one class. so i guess the whole thing comes down to being poor and needy!

i also teach part time though and i work well with a timetable; so when i am not going to work i wake up in the morning as if i am going; set the scene for my research. if i am going to the library, i leave the house early just as i would when going to teach. i find i work better this way, i dont get side tracked and stay in bed simply because i dont have a group students waiting for me. i tell myself; research is waiting and calling! hope this helps. am no good though in the eves, i do light reading unless i've a dealine. the thingw ith teaching also is that i find myself doing some of the work at home, so i try and completely switch off when its my research day.

i live off campus and i really like it though it has its downsides, extra bills etc but i find its somehow nice in the sense that i feel somehow independent. i like the idea of not being on campus coz then i am not reminded of being the student that i am.

so sorry about your brother. with regards to your current professor i think you really need to talk. if both of you are not happy working together talk about it and see if you can move to another. i think you also need someone who is fluent in English. the idea that both of you are not fluent looks like a recipe for disaster esp if you are working on your project in english. English is my second language and i have learnt a lot from my english speaking supervisor. good luck

am likely to use to use two languages with translation underneath for quotes. the write up will be in english, the other language is an african one because people that i ve to interview are not fluent in english. so far so good, i have done it before and it worked. good luck with your focus groups!

on further reading this thread i think you should request for another supervisor. how on earth did you go for the whole year without seeing him??? and then when you see him he is so negative!!! goodness i think u should have a talk with him, how can he say that he cant answer your questions if you dont know the answers. jeez i really dont envy you. if he is not willing to be your supervisor then he should say so. does he supervise any other students?? at the end of the day if you fail no one will ever say it was your supervisor's fault. so rise above the situation and do something about it, even if it means making a complaint. the other thing is every uni has a code of what you must expect from a supervisor and also the research office if its a sound one will do checks; you know like a monitoring process of how you are getting on and how often you meet up and if you are having any probs. u need to do something before its too late.

sounds like your supervisors are really not doing their job. they should have read your work before hand and offered their criticism before you went to a panel of strangers. a good supervisor reads your work before hand and offers comments which you may/not incoperate in your final draft. next time i would say hold your supervisors down before you go before a panel. i don't know what your circumstances are but it wasn't fair of them. anyhow don't let this keep you down, take it as a learning process, next time am sure you will know what to do beforehand. wishing u well

hi sheena, i am an international student myself. at my university the write up fees for the year is the same for everyone, home/international. the home office does extend student visas for PhD students doing write ups for a whole year. after the write up year if you havent finished at my university you will have register paying the full fee. i think it differs with universities and if you look at the home office website you will find infor ref- write ups. are you studying in the uk? well i am assuming u are!

relax, show that you are keen to learn new stuff. at least it worked when i did it though i have to confess the interview was terrible since i had no idea about the recent developments in FE. well they gave me the job to my suprise so i guess they were looking for something else.

yes finished that bit of work a while ago though i will soon have my tapes to transcribe for my thesis. then i will have to translate and trascribe! you actually have a secretary to transcribe for you?? blessed thou art!! wow! !
