Thank you ToL. Do you tend to drastically reword the abstract to avoid plagiarism anyway?

It is! Someone might be able to help. But it is worth looking elsewhere for advice too. All the best!

I just mean that a question one person loves another person may hate (I wouldn't want to answer questions about the challenges of Brexit myself)!

I think it is important to include a range of different questions so that the candidate gets a chance to hopefully shine. Sorry if I am stating the obvious. It just came to me!

Hello folks

I am just wondering - on the topic of plagiarism - is it considered plagiarism to present your work at a conference (technically classed as a publication) and then also submit the same study in a paper for a journal? I know it must be the norm, as you surely wouldn't have to not publish your work in a journal just because you presented it at a conference, but how does this work in terms of plagiarism?

Thanks so much.

Can I copy parts of my master thesis directly into my PhD? How to reference copied text?
T

Absolutely - you can only use gain credit / qualification for a piece of work once.

I agree. I think you need to somehow get in touch with some postgraduate students / staff in India and ask them for advice. Or check out the websites of some of the potential institutes?

‘three papers’ PhD

I'm doing the alternative format also. As far as I understand:
- you must have notified "them" that you are submitting in this way instead of the traditional format
- the paper format is introduced and explained at the start of the thesis
- you literally insert the papers (print them in whatever form they are in - accepted, under consideration etc)
- you write an introduction, methods chapter, and discussion around them (since 1) the papers will be too short to have included all the relevant information, 2) the thesis needs to be wrapped together as a coherent whole)

So plagiarism isn't an issue here - it is known and stated that the papers are published or going to be published elsewhere.

This would be considered plagiarism, which is taken very seriously.

I agree with Pjlu - if it can be summarised. But if on the other hand the content needs to be re-stated in your PhD (e.g., it is the same literature you are reviewing, or the same method you are employing) then this needs to be re-written so that it is not a replication of what you have written before.

No reply from PhD supervisor after interview?

Hi Huubte. It all seems a bit confusing.

Are you applying to do a PhD in your home country? Is that where the scholarship funding will come from?

When did you email the supervisor? If has been a week or so you could try sending another email.

My best question was when they asked me to tell them about my favorite paper (that I'd read). It had all been a bit dry and nerve wracking till then. But that question helped me to really loosen up and also show a bit of enthusiasm. I didn't feel like I was being tested, but rather that they were genuinely interested.
