returning to postgrad study as a single parent

OK. Then it must definitely depend on the field. It could be worth trying to find out specifically from someone in your field kateprec.

But it is thinking quite far ahead... I mean, you could do the MRes regardless and then see about moving elsewhere (or staying) for the PhD. Even if you get 1+3 funding, I should think it should be possible to swap to another institute at the start of the PhD as long as they are in the same doctoral college (and these are usually regional I think - e.g., Leeds, Sheffield and York... Manchester, Liverpool, Lancaster).

I think it depends on your department and maybe on your field. Several in my department did their UG/masters/PhD there and now work there or have moved elsewhere. I was under the impression that is wasn't so important these days.

None of my business so obviously feel free not to answer... is this a recent decision?

Thrown Under the Bus By My Academic Supervisors
T

And by the way congratulations. No way was this a waste of time. No one can take away from you what you have achieved.

Your supervisors seem to be trying to thwart your way forward for some reason. Just see it as a roadblock that in 5 years time you will look back and think, "wow, I got over that", rather than seeing it as wasted years and years and years. It really isn't that. You've come so far and it is unlikely that they are going to be able to wreck your career ultimately.

What is the relationship between you and them now? Is it too late to start writing papers? It may be that they are thinking of publishing your data themselves (if that is the nature of your reserch) once you're out of the picture.

Thrown Under the Bus By My Academic Supervisors

Quote From PhDdiva:
I have recently completed my PhD (2 months ago) and had a meeting with my supervisors the other day to discuss my career options. They informed me that I was not intelligent enough to be an academic, and was ill prepared due my lack of preparation (i.e. too few publications, and not currently doing a post-doc) and that I should look into 'other' types of careers.

I don't believe the not intelligent enough part, although I've never met you (you're obviously intelligent enough or you wouldn't have got on or got through the PhD). It could be that they don't think you demonstrate traits that equip you well for an academic career. I still find it a bit odd though - since you've clearly demonstrated the main ones (perseverence, resilience, ability) through completion of your PhD.

It really sucks that you've been left in this position. I would still say go for it, whatever it is you want to do. It will be harder without their strong support in things like references. But do you have any other mentors in your field of interest, who might be able to encourage/support/advise/write references for you?

Attend Graduation?

I've never attended any of my graduations (UG, Masters) - if you don't want to then don't!

On the other hand if you think you will change your mind and will want to go, then you should probably just book it and plan to go.

My abusive supervisor has conflict of interest with my publication at the last minute. Help!

Hi again

If it's style and nothing substantive then just swallow your annoyance, run it by the author authors, and change it. Later when you are free from your supervisor you can title your papers whatever you want. This seems like an easy option... best at this stage?

Are you able to request the title change anyway? If the editors say no then you can say I requested it but it was not permitted.

Presentations and talks - different expectations for males vs females
T

Hi folks

I just wondered... do you think that there are different expectations about presentation style in talks and interviews depending on whether the person is a male or female?

Do men often get told to "be more animated" or "appear more enthusiastic"? Or is something that is more expected of women?

What is your experience?

Supervisor wants to submit in too high journal
T

Good idea re third possible journal. I absolutely believe in aiming high too. And my NEXT study WILL hopefully (again with a stretch) go in that journal. It seems to fit it.

No problems with rejection, thankfully. Just like to do things that make sense to me.

Graduation: Who to please? Family or myself?
