I've heard of it before. I suspect it isn't because they haven't written one before, but rather because they consider themselves too busy to write one, and would rather just sign one off. The practise does seem a bit questionable, but then so many things are in academia.

Just list all the stuff you did and the kinds of things you would want your supervisor to comment on in the letter - such as attention to detail, professionalism, etc. Then draft it into a letter based on some of the ones you can find online. Hopefully your ex sup will at least edit it so that it is a bit in their style.

Also there should be some guidance on the conference webpage. Normally they want it to meet certain specifications so that it fits nicely in their display area.

Re how to make it look pretty... check out the walls of your University or google and have a look at some academic posters online. See what it is that makes them appealing and use a similar style.

I do get where Apastron is coming from, but I think it is also important to remember that science isn't good because it is complex, or because others perceive it as complex. In fact, it might be utter crap yet complex. On the other hand, it could be beautifully and almost flawlessly simple and GOOD science.

Congrats on getting another interview invite so soon. I would add to what others have said and suggest looking at how their courses are currently marketed on the website, youtube etc. What are they already doing (and what are they not doing), how could you build on that, and what would it add. I come from a commercial background and it was always important to show you'd really done your homework on them as an organisation and were aware of what they already offered.

Follow the marking criteria set out by Tree Of Life and you'll have a good chance of doing well! I always found I did better on marked assignments/dissertations just by focusing on producing something of high quality - not so much excellent in terms of inspiring or some kind of breakthrough - just clear, logical and well written.

Thank you skyisnotthelimit! Encouragement from you all plus my little childish poster on the kitchen cupboard is motivating me (also it helps that it is NEARLY FRIDAY and the thought of not having a chance to re-read and edit what I've written before submitting it makes me SHUDDER into life!). A few more paragraphs of the Discussion and then the whole paper will be finished (in very rough form in places!). I will have a day (tomorrow) to dedicate to improving it!

Ps. Thinking of buying some coloured pegs or glittery star stickers for my reward chart!
