“you'll be well looked after there”

Quote From profkmorrell:
It is a shame that you are doubtful of such praise and encouragement, it might be worth thinking about why you doubt this because you are going to get far more ambiguous signals than this in academia. You're clearly very talented. If I may make a suggestion - please don't take this the wrong way it's meant to be helpful - it may help you to read up on Impostor Syndrome. Don't let this get in your way... congratulations again!!!

Wow, you inferred a lot! I thought it was more a case of the person being a non-native speaker of English and just needing to double check the meaning of that phrase in that context! :-)

Is it necessary to publish papers
T

Yes, this all just depends on so many factors. If papers are currency in your domain then yes it matters. But I think there is still hope if you don't publish much/any from your PhD. You can try and get a role that allows you to develop and publish. Probably challenging to find though. I have that challenge ahead of me!

Ps. Loving all things to do with language and pragmatics, I have to add...

if it was used in another context... for example, say you had just received a sentence and were going to a notorious prison in South America, and someone said that...

... then it could have very different connotations (e.g., you might expect to experience some violence and be lucky to come out alive)!

Hope that helps : )

Absolutely agree with laebae! But I can also understand your concern as a non native speaker. Seriously - it means nothing at worst and what laebae says at best! Congratulations and all the best in your PhD journey :-) Great that you'll be maintaining links with your former university as well.

Will I be too old to apply for Ph.D. at the age of 30

The primary reason for what? The post is titled "Will I Be Too Old To Apply For Ph.D. At The Age Of 30"... the answer is a big emphatic no :-)

I've taken your survey : )

Will I be too old to apply for Ph.D. at the age of 30

It depends on your context and other personal factors that might be important (e.g., finance, other commitments, support), but definitely not on your age. Many people pursue PhDs in the years beyond their 20s and 30s.

Hit a new low with my PhD and I don't know how to continue - any advice welcome

So happy to hear things are looking up! : )

I'm bewildered (not trying to be you or anything, Bewildered, if you're still about somewhere)... But all's well that ends well! : D

Quants people - presenting loads of models
T

Yeh I don't really get it either... It's some preliminary analyses I'm doing for someone else and they've kind of directed me as to what they wanted me to do and then asked me to present it. I've checked with them for clarification now. Maybe they didn't mean separate models for each predictor but rather all the predictors in the same model (for each outcome). That would make more sense.

Good advice re what is normally in a paper. Thanks : )

Hi there quants folks

Is there a way to present loads of regression model results on a couple of slides? I'm talking about 25 or so... How would you normally do this?

Thanks

Doing the Second PhD in a Different Subject
T

Not to be controversial but if it is in a different subject that you love and you can get funding, then why not apply for a second PhD? However, I would be upfront with any potential advisor about your existing PhD. I'm not sure whether you'd get funding easily etc.

On the other hand though, if the subject is closely related then the wiser path might be to look for a postdoc as people have suggested. Or even an RA position where you can possibly be given a different role later. Broaden the scope of your search and branch out to increase your options... A PhD and six papers sounds amazing...

But it does all sound a bit confusing...

Yes, do consult handbook and course director for clarification about the grades. I think it is unlikely that there would be a mistake on the transcript but you never know. It is definitely worth checking it out, as such things do happen. And that is a huge difference.

Are you talking about applying for funding or being accepted to self fund? If the former, then the competition will be extremely high. I know one lady whose grades were quite low, but who had experience in the field, as (it sounds) you do. She ended up getting funding for part of her PhD and working as a teaching assistant (and now part time lecturer) to pay for the rest of her PhD/living costs. This is a Russell Group Uni, so there are ways of doing these things if you can be flexible / make sacrifices.
