PhD with a 2.1 and a Pass

From what I have heard, having a scholarship that covers your studies places you in a desirable position even if the grades aren't as desired.

Yes, go for it. I think you'll have no problems at all. If you were applying for a studentship it would be a bit more difficult (but I'd still say try that too).

Best of luck!

It's always best to have Plan B. A real one that you're actively pursuing. In my experience, somehow (and annoyingly), that's when opportunities seem to open up. On the other hand, when all the eggs are in one basket, things hardly ever work out and it can be pretty heartbreaking/soul destroying.

All the best both!

Ah, you never know. All the best!

Any disadvantage to encrypting personal laptop?

Hello!
I just wondered if anyone out there works with an encrypted laptop, and if so, do you know if there are any disadvantages to it (other than having to enter the encryption code at start up)? I just want to check it doesn't affect the running of the computer in any way at all.
Thanks!

Visiting student in an American university

If you were able to visit MIT for a couple of months, that would give you lots of opportunities of meeting people (potential postdoc opportunities). Is there a fund you can apply to for conference funds? Usually there are a few things like this one can apply for. I think the MIT visit sounds very promising especially if your supervisor is willing to help you set you up with someone over there.

How many emails to potential postdoc advisor?

He may be interested in working with you but doesn't want to set anything rolling till after your viva. Yes, normal polite individuals normally reply and let you know their intentions. But when power is at play, (some) people don't behave that way.

Hey and good luck! I was on a reserve list for one of my applications, and was offered it in the end. I rang up admin and asked how many were on the reserve list. They told me there were two others and that I was on the top of the list. I didn't find out for a good week or so after the date they told me I'd know by. It was a horrible waiting game. I just kept ringing up to check (no doubt annoying for the admin person), and also made other plans in the meantime (applied for several jobs). I'd been disappointed before, so there was no way I wasn't going to have a real Plan B.

Hope this helps!

How to deal with lack of attendance (lecturing)
T

The strategy I suggested (ask them all to email queries by a certain point and then reply to all queries at once on a single Word doc - annonymizing the queries and letting them know that they'll be annonymized) is one that a lecturer at undergrad did with my cohort. It worked well. At the time, it was beneficial for me as a student, as I got to take useful bits from other people's questions too (which I hadn't previously thought about). For the lecturer (not that I thought about such things as this at that stage in my career!), it meant that he had a set time to deal with queries, and once done, it was done. I think it's probably the most helpful and efficient option!

Should I quite my high paying job for a full-time PhD
T

Hey there,

This is coming from someone not in your position at all... : )

From what you have said, if you think there is a high risk of not finishing it NOW, then you are probably being realistic with yourself, and so have to decide whether that is a risk you want to take. Worst case scenario, you quit and find another job, I guess.

It sounds like you definitely want a change. Is there no option to go do and learn new things in a new (equally high paid) job? (Just to avoid or at least substantially reduce the risk aspect).

I'm just thinking that leaving full time employment and starting a PhD isn't the only way to have more freedom in what you do?

While I said I'm not in your position at all, I did leave my fairly well paid job in 2009 to pursue further education. It was the only option for me at the time - I wasn't qualified to find a different, more interesting job (especially amid a recession), and there was no way I could continue in a job that I hated so much. So the risk was substantially smaller - I had everything to gain and not much to lose (no family to support etc).

I'm not sure if this helps at all, but I just thought I'd reach out anyway. Good luck in your decision!

I didn't get any scholarships :(

What kind of scholarship are you talking about, and what level of education?

Gosh the previous poster brings back memories of my UG years! I had low attendance warning letters every semester threatening to stop my funding (just managed to stay above the threshold)! Rewt is so right!
