Anyone NOT using any referencing software whatsoever??
V

Not using any reference management software would be as walking 30 miles instead of taking the bus. I didnt use it for Masters and deeply regreted later.

Post-nominal letters - what to do when you have a PhD?
V

Although Msc is an achievement, however, PhD is a higher level achievement that implies that you have the Msc level knowledge and skills, whether you did or didnt do Masters. Therefore it does not make sense to put both Msc and PhD. I would not use both. Unless your PhD and Msc are in different fiels.

Endnote or RefMan
V

I have used both. Both are allright but I prefer Endnote because it is available on all university PCs, more convinient

Question about Endnote
V

Tools- Endnote- Unformat citations. And when you want them back then do the same, except for Format citations.

Wasted Research (argh!)
V

unfortunately, during PhD period it has happened to me many times...

how old are all of you guys?
V

I will be 34 when I finish my PhD. But in my year we have a man who is already is his 50s.

If you are doing a PhD at Cambridge
V

I got PhD place in Cambridge AND scholarship with 2.1. Mys sister got a PhD place in Cambridge with 2.1 . I had a master from cambridge but she came straight from BSc from a foreign country. So, no problems, as they say, they are more interested in an interesing 2.1 than in boring first. It means, if you can persuade them that they really will benefit from you being there, that working with you will be fun, doesnt matter that you are not brilliant.

Need some advice please
V

3 pages is rather too long, nobody is interested in scientific details of hat you will be doing. Just think in what the person in the organisation who will give you permission to do research in their organisation is interested in, and write in on max 2 pages, i would even say on one page. Basically: aim of the study, when and what you plan to do, what will be their benefits and how you will adress ethical issues they or they employees might be concerned about.

Have you done anything unproffesional or stupidly inappropriate?
V

I
1) started to cry in the 2nd year interview;
2) have asked at least 137 stupid questions in seminars, workshops and conferences

phew - paper written!
V

well done!

I got ripped to pieces by my supervisor
V

well, I am afraid that even when you will be a Professor, still there will be many things you wont be aware of.

If your relationship with your superivisor in general is good, then most likely s/he was simply trying to help you with attracting your atention to the things you need to read for your own sake.

Discouraged about quality of PhDs
V

A simple question: if Canadian degrees are so much better than european, why none of Canadian Universities is even in the top of world university ranking? Where are your many top researchers and Nobel prize laureates?

threatened by supervisor
V

npsych

the same here, every time I havent agreed with my supervisor and did what I thought was the right thing, I regreted it later and changed to his idea. But he never threatened to resign....Sounds really infantile thing to do...

What is longest you have gone without doing work?
V

BurgerKing:
nope, he really wrote up his own PhD in three months before his first child arrived:)
About 5 hours, it is reasonable if you work regularly, have effective working habits (e.g. do not read everything 7 times from A-Z) and are in social sciences, and it does not include breaks.

PhD and pregnancy- advise needed
V

well, it will be you who will be carying a baby AND trying to finish PhD, not him. What if you pregnancy will have some side-effects (hopefully not) on your wellbeing and it in turn will affect your ability to work? Pregnancy(especially if it is your first baby) and completing PhD both are too stressful events to combine them. Half-a-year is not such a long time to wait and wont make so much difference, but pregnancy could make a diffrence on how fast you finish your PhD.
