research methods --- agrh
V

forgot to add- and the choice of the method strongly depends on your research question and hypothesis:)

research methods --- agrh
V

there is no good or bad research method. as long as you can justify why you using this and not that method, everything goes.
The size of the sample for surveys depends on:
1) the size of the population (e.g. 200 respondents might be enough if your population is 1000 but not if it is 100000
2) what statistical methods are you going to use for analysis (if it is quantitative study (.e.g. there are certain rquairements regarding respondents and variables ration for regressions etc

But the most important thing is not how many people you have in your sample but how do you select them.

In general, it seems that reading some literature on research methods could be quite beneficial to solve your issue;)

argh! AHRC letter came bringing ill tidings
V

sorry to hear that, maybe you will get in next year? I had to take gap year because of the lack of the funding but then got full scholarship. So, maybe it is a test for your motivation.
About age- well, people do PhDs even in older ages, in my departmet there is a man, in his 50s, succesful businessman, who just started a PhD;)

80 hour week!!???
V

well, it is unbelievable because in order to work 80hrs a week (i.e. around 14 hrs a day) you need a very strong mental and physical health. To have strong health you need regular meals, sports etc, i.e. time to do it. I dont believe but if it is true, it wont last long. He might end up in hospital, in the best case in a normal one, in the worst- in mental health care institution.
My supervisor says that 5 hours of a good work a day, 6 days a week is completely enought to finish your PhD in decent time.

What happens if you quit?
V

3 weeks if you are very highly motivated is enought to write a quite decent 1st year report. In addition, if you dont pass with the 1st attempt, they give you feeback on your report and you have opportunity to submit it once more. If you are motivated and really a PhD material, using that feedback you will definitely pass.

What happens if you quit?
V

regarding scholarship- it depends what the paper you signed says.
regarding what happens- one guy who did not pass the 1st year report in our university some years ago, is now a millionaire in Asia:)))

your teaching experience + PhD
V

Teaching is fun but takes up lots of time if you want to do it properly. Wont take any teaching next time.

Surviving a PhD

Maybe you can talk with your boyfriend about what lifestyle you can afford? For example, if you have not moved to live with him, would you have lived in a cheaper accomodation? How often YOU can afford to go out and pay for yourself? What other things that cost you money you would not do if you would have not lived together? That you are living with your boyfriend is does not mean that it is only you who has to streach yourself financially to adjust to his lifestyle, he has to adjust to your situation as well.

Maybe this helps: I have aggreed with my boyfriend (who has more money than I do but isnt terribly well off)that if we want to do something together that I cant afford,I tell him that. Then, either we dont do that or he sometimes offers to share my expenses. And we have agreed if I decide to move in with him, while am studying, I will pay only what I currently pay for my student accomodation- he offered it with a reason, that I should not sacrify myself for his wish to pay off mortgage sooner.

one option is to split everything 50/50. But taking into account that you are a student, probbaly with income lower than his, why not split all proportionally to your income?
