motivational strategies - what makes you get out of bed?
V

1) good breakfest
2) something nice to look forward after the work is done (e.g. meeting with friends, dancing, doing nothing)
3) not pluging in Internet before work is done (ohh, this is a very hard one to do:)

What area of research are you in?
V

my is something between social/organisational psychology and sociology

What are people planning to do proffesionally after their PhD?
V

I agree with you AnonGerman regarding women and Academia, however, it strongly depends from the subject. As far as I know, in social sciences where you do not work in lab together with others, you can have more flexible working hours. But of course, in sciences labs it can be that leaving at 5 is considered as part time job:)
and different universities, even departments, have different attitudes towards working flexibly.

Publications, yea, that is a real, real problem...

BTW people in Academia also make millions;)) There was an article in Times Higher supplement last week- some chemists in the UK universities etc. have made even 4-40 milj for themselves from their inventions:)) Good example to follow:)

I am staying in Academia. I have already tried both- industry and work at university. I definitely preder University. If you are very good, you can make a decent money in Academia as well.Plus, as many of you already mentioned- flexibility and better life style, especially if you want to have family and kinds and really spend time with them.

how much work have you done today?
V

I was working on data analysis all day (around six hours) and then discovered that due to some mistakes in the beginning of the day all my work has been useless....moreover, correlations that I tested turned to be significant but weak what means- who cares that there is a correlation.
In brief- very depressing:((

Endnote technophobia- help!
V

How much work did you do in your first couple of months
V

You know, I think it is allright. In my first year of PhD I has quite a lot of concultancy and others jobs (plus serious personal and health problems) but still passed first year with the first attempt.
BUT, you should be careful if you havent got your Masters from the University you are currently going to PhD and are not familiar with their recquirements, then you will need more time for your first year report.

Hi everyone :)
V

working already a little bit:( and :)

Horrible supervisor experiences!
V

I some kind of agree with mellory: better to have critical supervisor than somebody who is happy with everything you do and then you fail the first year...your relationship still can change.

But what to do- would you be able to find somebody else who might have a look on your work, discuss your ideas, just to have some other opinion on your work? In some universities every student has faculty adviser besides his supervisor...

Partner/ family / friends who don't understand what you 'do' ?
V

the same here. I am the only one in my family in at least last five generation that has got a unversity degree, not to talk about PhD. nobody really understands why and what I am doing. Moreover, everybody whom I used to support financially when I had a very good job is very surprised and dissapointed that I live on scholarship only and can not help them anymore. sometimes I feel really, really lonely in my efforts...

What Uni is everyone at?
V

I am in Cambridge, second year PhD in Social and Political Sciences.
