Yeah Payal, I hate the taste of SPAM; it's really artificial, cheap and crap.

I'm a Dr now and it's a bit weird, very nice though!!

Very well done, Doc Ruby!!!(up)

Before Departure

In Oxford, never trust a man whose eye brows meet in the middle. Burger King burgers are better than McDonalds. Buy a bike - everybody rides bikes in Oxford. Never accept sweets from strangers. Erm, it's late and that's all I can think of for now.

Does it occur to you BHC that it is not very professional to write about this in a public forum?

Having common sense, Commonsense, BHC has made sure that it is completely anonymous, so rest easy and stand down.;-)

What are the choons to keep ya going/listening to at the mo?
W

Hmm, I'd like to ask, has anyone found that they've listened to so much music that they are bored with it, in general, and so can't bring themselves to listen to anything? It's a shame as I used to really find it motivating but now I have to work in boring silence.

Hatton Vs. Pacquiao - OMG!
W

I reckon he'll retire now. His confidence will be knocked, his reputation has gone down significantly, and who is there for him to fight now?

Hatton Vs. Pacquiao - OMG!
W

Did anyone see this match. I waited up to the wee small hours and, well, it was the most shocking and uneven boxing match I've ever seen. It was mesmerising for the brief period of time they boxed. Pacquiao was in a completely different league, phenomenal, and absolutely flattened Hatton (much worse than the Maweather fight), who was, literally, a punch bag. Roll on the much touted Mayweather-Pacquiao match!

Getting something personal off my chest

I can relate to you. Work is in exactly the same way as yours, my friends are wrapped up in their own lives and I'm back living with my parents (though this is temporary), so I'm trapped, can never get out anywhere. Oh and I'm skint too. Things will get better though, Hypothesis. Chin up :-)

NO DONT QUIT!

Were we seperated at birth? In an exactly identical situation!!!
Really disillusioned y'day and was really tempted to get ballistically plastered, but a clear head today and while still in the fire, decided to turn it around, even at this late stage! Could have spent today moaning and face-booking/youtubing but just sat down, wrote up a plan to get a pivotal paper (my first - yikes!!!!) out the gap. I always thought I needed my supervisors approval but you know what ... its our work and if we have to pi$$ off a few people, so what! They are paid enough and its not as if half of them give a toss!

Had a meeting yesterday and after the supervisor said "what would you do if you had to quit?" I bluntly told him "There is f**k all out there!". We are like Vikings who have burnt the ships on the shore ... so I think its about time that we fought like people with nothing to lose. Sorry for the analogy and rant, but really feel like getting a battle axe at times :-s That said, started looking up some alternatives ... always good to have the escape raft.

One question that always perplexes me though ... when (which we will) get our PhD's, will we turn into those supervisors from hell??? Is there a specific course for that or is it just a case that the academic world weeds out the conscientious people who basically forgot that we are basically on subsistence wages and not here for the fun of it!

Bonzo, mi man, can really relate to your post. Nice poetic analogy too. I wonder if I will turn into an awkward supervisor? Like you say, there is, for the most part, no point in quitting as there is frig all else - and that's what keeps me going. Even though my PhD has cocked up my life in quite a few ways, made me deeply cynical and sometimes depressed, I think 'screw it', and 'don't quit!' As Olivia says 'hang in everyone' because, sorry to sound cliched there are always gping to bad times as well as good times.

Hi Joyce, stick this info on the thread here (http://forum.pcformat.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=6&sid=8673404c55187ee53ac821f74e09f282) and you should get an expert and speedy response. I've been helped more than once! You'll have to register to post on the forum first, but it's worth it.

Swine Flu - What do you think?
W

Given the intense media coverage, it's inevitable that you'll have heard about this swine fever that's supposed to be on the brink of becoming a pandemic. The WHO has raised its pandemic level to level 5, one below the maximum level of 6. The thing is, it's not supposed to be much worse than having a normal bout of flu (so I've read), it's not killed that many people at all so far (not when you consider how many people normal flu polishes off per year) and anti-viral drugs are available to treat it quite effectively.
Personally, I think the media has really over-hyped swine fever and the impact it's going to have, particularly that bastion of right-wing decency and solid family values, The Daily Mail (bit disappointed with the Guardian's scare-mongering coverage too). However, we're all highly intelligent and highly logical people, we members of this forum, so I'd be interested to hear what anyone else thinks about swine and what the think the impact will be. Are you really concerned, or are you a bit like me and think that much of it is a 'storm in a teacup'?

What to do if your neighbour's cat enters in your flat?
W

Quote From dangerousdave:

I had the same problem a few months ago. A random cat kept using the cat flap to let itself in and bully our cat, which admittedly is a bit of wuss for allowing it, but I guess that's what you getting for cutting its balls off. Anyway, whenever I found it lurking about the house it seemed in no hurry to leave - shouting certainly had no effect. I found that a sprayer, like the kind of thing used for kitchen/bathroom cleaners etc, filled with water had a good effect. There's nothing much you neighbour can do about it, as cats are completely uncontrollable and its cruel to keep them locked up all day. I've no idea what mine gets up to when it goes out.

'That's what you get for cutting it's balls off' - Hahahahahahaha! Cheers for giving me a laugh today, Dangerous Dave

Beat the Boredom Tactics
W

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Might try getting into origami or looking at magic eye pictures, sounds more fun than just being left alone with my thoughts when I'm bored, since many of them are quite negative at the moment anyway. I'm thinking of joining the gym, actually. So, when my brain turns to mush I can at least try to get rid of the rest of the mush on my body, imposed by being stationary all day. Plus it's supposed to be good for your state of mind too. :-)

Give it a one off shock, nothing too cruel. Have you tried shouting at it and chasing it off? Or, how about squirting it with a water pistol?
