The nocturnal workers' thread
W

I have a real shock today. I went out to my wheelie bin to chuck a carton away and a wasp flew out. What kind of a sick person would chuck a wasp in the bin?

I'm done for the night. Total words typed up = 3106. Remaining chapters to do = 2 and 1/3. Over and out.

Wow, Teek, I think you've written a power ballad there! I'll be back on this thread tomorrow with a reinterpretation of M and M's the Real Slim Slim Shady called This PhD's Really Shady - Please write up, please write up.

I'm never trying to re-write Wuthering Heights for PhD students again, but here's the re-interpretation...Withering Academic Heights

In my dingy room, coffee stains,
We'd roll and fall in the laptop screen,
I had a temper, you're my PhD,
Too hard, too needy
When I needed to possess you, I hated you, I still do too.

Bad dreams in the night,
They told me I was going to lose the fight,
Leave behind my withering, withering,
Withering academic heights.

PhD, it's me, Teek, I'm going home,
I'm getting so old, I'll escape out of the office window
PhD, it's me, Teek, I'm going home,
I'm getting so old, I'll escape out of the office window.

Oh it gets so dark, it gets so lonely,
On the unfinished side of you,
I pine a lot, I want to finish a lot,
Falls through with you,
I'm going home now, cruel PhD,
My once dream, my daily disaster.

Too long I roam the net in the night,
I'm going home, I'll never put it right,
I'm going home to withering, withering,
Withering academic heights.

PhD, it's me, Teek, I'm going home,
I'm getting so old, I'll escape out of the office window
PhD, it's me, Teek, I'm going home,
I'm getting so old, I'll escape out of the office window.

Ooh let me have it, let me have my viva and run away,
Ooh let me have it, let me have my viva and run away.

PhD, it's me, Teek, I'm going home,
I'm getting so old, I'll escape out of the office window
PhD, it's me, Teek, I'm going home,
I'm getting so old, I'll escape out of the office window.
I'm getting so old.

I see you've thrown down the gauntlet. To paraphrase Arnie (1984, 1991, 2003): I'll be back. I'll adapt Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights into a style more appropriate for PhD students...

Excellent song-writing skills, Teek! You've created the living embodiment of a contradiction in terms: productive use of procrastination. I'll never get that song out of my head now.

SPSS 18
W

I think SPSS was renamed to Pasw (for version 18 - it's PASW statistics 18) and then back to spss again. Anyway, we're now at version 19 for the PC (http://www.spss.com/software/statistics/) and you can download a 14 day trial.

Paper needed

Sorry, Emmaki, I spent 45 minutes trying to get it. It's hosted by ProActive publications and none of the universities I can try have access to it.

dvd and cdr
W

A CD has a capacity of 700MB and a DVD 4.9GB, or 7GB if dual layered. If you put a lot of songs on a disc as MP3s, make sure that whatever you're going to play it on will play MP3's. More likely than not, it will nowadays - unless it's on of the very first compact disk players ever made.

Well, I'm done for the night but I'll be back tomorrow around the same time - meh.

How do you export a citation from Pubmed into Endnote?
W

To import a citation from Pubmed to Endnote, just do the following:

1) When you have the Pubmed abstract onscreen, click on send to (top right).
2) Click on the option File from the Choose Destination options.
3) From the download options, choose Medline
4) Click on Create File.
5) The file will download and then you need to open it with Endnote.
6) You'll be prompted to choose a download filter. Search for and select Pubmed.
7) Click on Ok and it'll import.

That all sounds a bit long winded and there's actually an easier way. Just go to tools, select online search and choose pubmed. You'll automatically be able to search the Pubmed database and import whatever references you want.
:-)

PGF Drinks/Dinner up North...

Right well, that's 3 of us so far. We'll wait a few days and to see if any other people would like to meet up as well. This'll be ace.

PGF Drinks/Dinner up North...

I'm in the Northwest and I think it's a really good idea, so count me in. Manchester would be a pretty neutral spot for a meet, I think - but I'm open to other suggestions.:-)
