Alpacalover, I'm a bit of a weirdo in that I'm hooked on nicotine chewing gum, like that Ruby Wax was. I have minty thresh breath, sparkly white teeth but I don't look particularly cool chewing gum. More like a camel chewing a cactus. Little wonder no-one sits next to me on the train.:$

ECONOMIC GROWTH IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Overthemoon, would you like fries and a milkshake with that? That's a very big request. Below is a very good book to get you started on your quest (I've PM'd you regarding me giving you the book). You should find what you need. I don't usually go this far to be helpful, but I'm trying to impress coolprofessor and show him I'm the best man for the job he's advertising.

"Introduction to Economic Growth"

One of the hottest fields in contemporary macroeconomics, economic growth is both fascinating to theorists and critically important to policy makers. In Introduction to Economic Growth—the only text in the field designed specifically for advanced undergraduates—Charles I. Jones explains in clear, direct language how economists have come to understand the long-run growth of economies. Beginning with empirical evidence—how rich are the rich countries, how poor are the poor, and how fast do the rich and poor countries grow? —Professor Jones then presents the major theories of economic growth, from the Nobel Prize-winning work of Robert Solow to the new growth theory that has ignited the field in recent years.

Right, enough for tonight - 3 hours of lectures to do tomorrow.

Another late night of work. Oh well...in for a penny, in for a pound.

I'm knackered, but I'll try, Cheesecake or trifle: the biggest bugger in the manufacturing process - an investigation into cream whipping paraphernalia - curd whipping ephemerality.

Choo choooooo! Feeling the thunder of tiredness now...must press on.

Quote From cakegirl:

I'd like to propose that performance can improve with the addition of a unit or two...loosening up the grey matter for a bit of free writing. Plus generally getting past the stress of a stressful day.

I agree with the point about drinking slowly over time - necking three pints of snakebite in half an hour would probably undermine my above proposal...

I'm going back to my glass of white...

What a keen scientific mind you have, Cakegirl! Your hypothesis is correct. One Carling later and I'm still writing. If, by some miracle, I am your viva examiner, I'm going to pass you - no questions asked.

It's 11 pm, I've downed one beer and I'm still going strong! And...I've managed to get my hands on the audiobook Day of the Triffids - bonus! Party time at Walminski's! I will report back in exactly 90 minutes to update myself on my progress.

I don't think that GPs are particularly well trained when it comes to psychological health, unless they are GPs with a special interest. Unless they have personal experience or have frequently encountered it before, I also think that they are a bit out of touch with understanding psychosomatic stress. Panic attacks, palpitations, aches and pains, lethargy, apathy - stress, anxiety and depression can be truly debilitating. But they can't see it, measure it or palpate it, so they often don't see it as being serious or think that it deserves further attention. They are also the same with fields such as sports related injuries and overuse injuries. As PhDbug says, it's usually 'take some ibuprofen, drink plenty of water' and maybe a couple of leaflets pertaining to lifestyle advice - an attempt at patient education and empowerment. Perhaps their training curriculum needs reviewing? In their defence, it should be noted that they only have about 10 minutes consultation time and very large case loads.

Apologies for the typo. Get off with 2 cans of Carling? Get on with drinking them I meant. Now that was an interesting Freudian slip :$

Thanks Jepsonclough and Slizor. I'll just buy 2 from the good people of my local Spar and see how I get off with them. Dry white wine, Jepsonclough? That's a bit too sophisticated for my palette. Having said that, I have been known to be partial to the odd tipple of Blue Nun in my rock star days.

Beer and work

It's a Saturday and I have to work into the early hours tonight. I always like a beer at the weekend (and a good laugh at Kate Bush trying to dance on her Wuthering Heights video - it cheers me up as I try and work). So, my question is, how many beers do you think one can drink before work...erm...stops? Would 2 cans of Carling be okay, do you reckon? Or am a gambling with my future. Perhaps a silly question, but with serious intentions. I've done a poll below for you to select the number you think I would be okay to drink.

Quote From teek:

The DFS crew are properly ODD wally! You're well out of that one.
But Betterware, hmm, you could get some useful freebies and you'd be famous amongst the OAP community for years to come - think of the opportunities for high tea and inheritance?

I'm just not sure how well the academic community would view me though if they caught me modelling spider catchers or bottles of window cleaner.

Quote From sneaks:

hmm I love radio 4 because it was constantly on as I grew up, so its kind of like having surrogate parents talking through the day in the background.

Wal - was it you who got hooked on nicorette gum? and if so have you managed to kick the habit?

No, I'm still a toxicodependent. I'll kick it when I no longer have to sit at my desk for days and days on end though.

Well, your supervisor can hush his mouth because there is, sort of...SPSS text analysis for surveys. I own it and it's swell. You can do quant at the same time as limited qual.
