Please review my statement of purpose for PhD in Finance

I usually charge for my advice, but here goes...

One-handed guitarists are very capable musicians! Have a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GT566bu2elU
You'll have to chop that section out.

Best Font for Presentation Handout?

Comic sans MS is a nice font that I find both clear and 'non threatening'. It may suit a non-academic audience.

I just had a paper rejected this afternoon :-( *sigh* the rejection stings like a bad-tempered jellyfish.

Unproductive day!

Thank you, Sneaks. I think I may have to join your accountability thread. I'm going to have some tea shortly and take my dog for a walk - bit of fresh air may do some good.

I know what it takes to get to the top - Linford Christie.

Unproductive day!

I have had a horrible, horrible day so far. I'm stuck and I'm fed up and in quit mode. I really do wonder what the point of it all is sometimes. I've got less than a year, everything to do, can't seem to write the discussion for a paper I have to try and get published. I don't mean to sound negative, but I've had it up to my ear lobes. Remind me: when is it that we're supposed to find this enjoyable again?

Hello Sneaks. Sorry to hear about your NVIVO hell. I've got a full copy of NVIVO 7, that I can upload for you, if you would like to use that in the meantime?

The Motivation Thread
W

I was watching Rocky 6 the other night and felt strangely motivated and in the mood to do work, even after a few beers. I think that was because of the many words of wisdom imparted to the viewer throughout the film. I do think that Sylvester Stallone is a motivational genius - and not only someone who has single handedly taken on whole armies and systematically destroyed them.
After watching the film, I had an idea. Realising that most of us (well probably all of us) have vast quantities of work and battle our motivation demons daily, I thought that it might be a good idea to start a thread where we can both impart and receive words of motivational wisdom. Unfortunately, I can't afford my own motivational trainer and I doubt Mr Motivator of GMTV fame would be willing to help me if I asked him. Anyway, I can't complete my PhD by doing squats and sit ups.

So, here are my motivational words of wisdom:

"It's not how hard you can hit, it's how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward" Rocky 6

"The best way out is always through" Robert Frost

"For God's sake, stop picking your nose and just get on with it!" Walminskipeasucker

"It's not the winning but the race. It's not the quarry but the chase" - a mate told me that one years ago.

It would be truly very good if we could try and come up with some of our own motivational sayings, based on our life experiences and doing our own PhDs. If anyone should be struggling with motivational problems at a particular time, they can just post their problems on this thread and we can try and help by providing them with words of motivation.

You could always Ask Jeeves - he knows everything. Formerly a mild mannered butler, Jeeves has diversified his talents and is now the UK's premier know-it-all on matters including good computer science journals with highly efficient turnaround times. I'd like to wish you good luck, but in Jeeves' capable hands you'll be fine.

Hello Noname, and welcome. I have processed your request with short turn around time. Your search ends here: http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&source=hp&q=computer+journals+short+turnaround+time&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=computer+journals+short+turnaround+time&fp=7fe5513f2cee5d19

PhD and Dyslexia

Hello Pre-phd. Welcome to the Postgrad forum. I don't think that having dyslexia will be a problem. One of my supervisor's has it, and it's never gotten in their way. Good luck with getting offered a PhD!(up)

Adverts and forum geography

If you use Mozilla Firefox you can download an add-on for free, called Ad-Block Plus which blocks virtually all adds on the internet. So when I visit this forum or any site on the internet, such as newspapers, I never see any of the annoying adds. It's worth giving it a try because pages load faster and the user experience (God, listen to me!) is much smoother.

Writing Strategies?

Hulley22 - lurrve the Indiana Jones explorer hat on your avatar. I'm the latter of your two classifications. I'm a (very)moderately talented slogger, which means I just work and work and then work some more on my thesis. Being in the 3rd year with very limited money, I sacrifice a life at the weekends and very rarely take a break. I teach around 6 hours a week at the moment, and so have to learn all about the lovely rheumatic diseases, their pathologies and management for lectures coming up this week. As Sue says, if you want to get it done within a reasonable time frame and are not a clever clogs, you can't just spend a few hours everyday a week on it. I cannot wait until my thesis is over, but until then I shall just have to pound it out.
Of course, not to sound irrelevant, it helps if your brain is made of kitchen role cos then the information you read and assimilate tends to stick - personally, this is my only saving grace.

The 4 star VIP thread!

Quote From stressed:

Can I stay Wally??? I know that I don't have the four stars of greatness, but I am rather enjoying the Blue Nun and White Lightening!

Well, if Vernon Kay can get an honorary doctorate, I don't see any reason why you can't become an honorary 4 star VIP member. If you like the White Lightning, I'd recommend you try some of the Breaker Superbrew and Cassini. Just don't feed the troll. Like a stray cat or dog, he'll come back expecting more and we don't want to encourage him.
