Hmmm my halls are postgrad only too....room is large an en suite but a t £85 not cheap....and they are right in middle of a huge student area so although the halls are quiet the noise outside is hoorendous...in fact im begining to think of becoming a vampire....work at night an sleep all day could be answer to my woes!!!
Yeah I think we could comprmise on a nice cuppa of darjelling!
Hopefully you got some sleep!
Hmm yeah my official offer letter took 3 weeks from my telephone offer but that was august so were probably all on holiday!
OK lady who i had to book the intro to a research PhD is Sarah Williams you may jus==t wanna check that this is for all PhD students but I cant see that the school of medicine would be running inductions for over 100 new PhD students seems unlikely! Anyway she may be able to tell you as she is the 'training admin' so she may be able to give you a number for a counterpart in your Dept. So her no is 0161 275 1454 (sorry postgrad team i know I should post names an numbers but its a helpfull one...i think!0
good luck house hunting!
In a way im lucky I did my undergrad degree in Manchester at the Met...... different uni same city....at least means I dont have to worry bout the both but the nerves are just about starting to kick in anyway!!!
In general they seem to be pretty organised about sending stuff out an there is a lot of it!! But may be worth asking your postgrad admin at the uni for more info! They sent me a thing called the critical guide there is a fair bit of info in that bu a lot isnt relevant as im a UK student who is on a studentship so have got my fee's paid too!!!
Any questions just ask....oh an accom wise if poss avoid student village an tramways as private halls (tiny tiny rooms) .....an avoid longsight an mosside as places to live unless you enjoy being shot at....As far as rusholme goes the closer to oxford rd the better.....But beggars cant be choosers at this point I guess!
hmm after all that I think I need a cuppa!
Hmmm now im a bit of an earl grey girl myself!
i quiet agree that they have left it rather late for your offr to start in time!
Im in the Dep medical an Human Sciences in the Stopford building (it to is on Oxford rd an the ugliest one of the lot) from what I can tell the induction thing is dependant on your dept. As I have a welcome event on the 25th an then there is an introduction to research course that is running that I assume is for all PhD students that you have too book on hmmm Im doing it the 9th an 10th Oct as thats the erliest date i could book but there are others.....do you want the name of the lady an tel number to book on??
Yay....i almost nearly have my voice back!!
Sorry Andyi too thought you were a girl .....but its OK cause you love tea too!! none of that nasty foriegn coffee stuff for me!!
Hope the hangover improves! good luck house hunting!!
which dept do you come under then sounds a bit cross a few different topics to me?
Yay!!! For Gridlocked!!!!!
Well Done!!!! Ekkkkk!!! Im so scared now do have somewhere to live though just which im very glad about!! was hoping to move a week today!! But have got tonsillitus for the first time in my life an can only wisper an feelin pants isnt helping with hte packing any!!!
Well gridlocked see you in the library....or maybe we can pop for a tea break some time!!
Woohhhhoooo to us both.......An good luck with house hunting...I was looking on gumtree an manchester student homes as susspect that the accom office wont have anything left by now!! They pretty much told me i wasrnt gonna get anything but did!!Phew!!
As you can prob tell I hated commuting there is noting worse than hauling your ass outa bed walkinga mile to the stationin the rain to discover the train is late/canceled due to leaves on the line/ tresspass on the line (this means kids who should be at school are 'playing' on the railway...if they are that stupid...well im not saying what I think!)driver strikes/trackside fire/ arson attempts that couse the tracks to buckle an 4 hour delay's!!
But you do save money...It just wasent for me.....but think this Bracket thing is catching!!!!!
Hi.....Im about to start my PhD but spent 18 months commuting to my Masters Course.
I used the train which cause I got a unizone ticket was MUCH cheaper 38 per week ... took 2 trains an anywher from 50 mins to 3 an a half hours ( well thats not true i gave up half way on that day as I had been going in 3 hours early to use library, so was still 30 miles away an no trains in the snow when my lecture started) So public transport is great but NOT very relyable.
Also for me was lab based an some time had to go over to feed cells (a 15 min job) on weekends which took me 3 an a half ours pretty much as a round trip......not very good way to spend my time
Also are you really g onna be able to work on public transport....peak hours there is just no space youre llucky to get a seat...an the rest of the time its full of noisy schoolkids an mums with screaming kids!!! Urgghhhhhh!!!
Yeah Im really glad Ive already lived in Manchester for 4 years means I know the areas to avoid and those that are OK.......
Saw Tramways and thought it reminded my of Strangeways rarther (the high security prison in Manchester) So thought I would avoid it!! Stundent village is a dive too!!
Been offered a room in private hall Q3 but is superior luxury or whatever that means...well it has its own balcony....somnewhere to drink pimms on I suppose or abuse the scallies!! But tis on Rusholme Longsite boarder so not too sure myself!!
Hmmm had a look at that website some look OK but my from what I have seen of Private halls in the past not gonna jump in too fast requested a few brouchures!
I do still have mates in Manchester from my undergrad days so wont be a total billy no mates just didnt think living with them woul work as have totally different agendas an the council tax thing!!
Im dreading it if I dont get anywhere....I hate looking for accom it sucks an after 4 years of it im pretty picky!
Hello All!
Question for you......Now Ive got my PhD looking for somewhere to live, Im applying for university halls as manchester has some soley POstgraduate student halls BUT as a UK Postgrad I come somewher bellow an amoeba on the list of who gets places as all undergrads and all International students of any level get allocated a place First!!
So I wont find out till 2 weeks before I start If I have any accom!!
Ekkk!! So what I wann know is should I wait to start looking into private accom (I dont really wann get into hastle of shared bills an sharing with a load of people I dont know) or start now!! Does anyone have any experince of postgrad hall what were they like?
Thanks!
My new supervisors have sent me journals to read when I asked them too which is ace!!
I also have a sister about to start her final year so obviously I have asked her to kindly look using her athens log in for me........obviously havent just got her password off her an ben doing it myself that would be wrong!!
