Yes it's possible, depending on what your department need, ask your supervisor and they may be able to point you in the right direction. I started teaching in my third year and now (in my fourth) I have a full time lectureship. Teaching is a worthwhile experience and it can help with finding a job in academia (in conjunction with publications etc), but as other people have said it can take up a lot of time so be careful not to take on too much as it could really slow down the PhD research.

I have 2 supervisors who sometimes make conflicting points. We sometimes have meetings all 3 of us so we are on the same page. Recently I have asked for my supervisors to give me electronic feedback (in a Word file) which they send by e-mail and cc each other in so they know what the other one has said. Sometimes that creates a dialogue where one supervisor will say (I agreed with point X from supervisor A but not her second point because...etc) Otherwise I try to identify who (out of my supervisors) is more of an expert in each particular area, or I just go with what I think is best...you are the one that has to justify your work at the end of the day.

I loved the first term teaching I did this year (undergrads) - it was great and they bought me a bunch of roses to say thanks! Second term - Masters students - not so good. They were a big group which is not really conducive to teaching at masters level in my area...also although I had some positive feedback from some of them there were a few who really seemed to resent the fact that they were being taught by someone who does not yet have a PhD, and they said as much...I then began to resent them for saying that because I thought well - if I wasn't preparing all these lectures for you and actually making an effort to give you some helpful feedback on your essays I might have finished my PhD by now!!!

I am tyred i have life exprience goin to stop writing now and do Belford :)

I have been! First on the to do list when I submit is excercise and giving up the excessive unhealthy addictions I have acquired whilst doing the PhD...well, cutting down at least!

I've also been doing this for 3 years 10 months. I hoped to finish within 3 years but then I took a full time job and it's been hard to finish off. I've completed a draft of the whole thing, have had fairly positive feedback but I've been told quite a few things to work on. *Hopefully* I'll finish in 7 weeks. It's strange how it's hard to stay motivated at the end. One would imagine you would see the finishing line and steam ahead, but I'm just too burnt out! I am now the Queen of Procrastination!

Things going a bit better - 1013 words today...total of 70,000 now.

I just read the article. I agree with Jen, it is scary! I guess it is the desire to avoid that regret (and potential damage to my career) that's keeping me going some days.

I'm sticking to the chair! Maybe it's trying to keep me here till I finish?!

DJWickid - has your supervisor read a first draft or are you just going it alone and handing it all in without him/her seeing it? My main supervisor is on sabbatical and my second is on maternity leave!

Glad to hear I'm not alone. Word count for today is -516! Hmm this motivational word count does not work so well when editing! I have written quite a few new words, but they're been off-set by the ones I deleted. I'm pleased with what I've done though, things are picking up.
