Finished thesis published online
Z

Hi Eska, at my institution we have no option but to publish it online BUT we are able to put a restriction on access until a specific time period. For instance, some who have recently passed in my department have put a 2 or 3 year restriction on it to allow them to publish from it. However, there is an option for people accessing it to 'request' a copy and the hosting site emails the author to approve it. This prevents it being completely inaccessible but gives people the peace of mind when publishing. Is there a similar option available for you?

Finally starting to be productive again. A little behind my planned schedule but on course for a full draft of the thesis by the end of the month. Have a big weekend of work ahead but feeling good about what I'm writing and editing. Will update again soon - more for my own accountability than anything! :)

Well done! :-)

I've also got full draft due in 3 weeks time, I really need to make a move on.

Oh my goodness Hugh I had no idea it was that soon! I made a timetable that corresponds with an October draft but I am hoping to get it in sometime in September- I need to take a leaf out of your book it seems!

Wow well done litphdgirl! That's fantastic! Not long for you now :)

I hope you hear back soon tuutikki, that must be frustrating.

I am applying for jobs and I kind of feel similarly- that I just want the PhD done and to focus completely on a job. Your comment to Chickpea is also very encouraging! I hope I get a second wind :)

Hugh- this is exactly what I am doing :) currently on chapter 2 of 10. I dreaded this part BUT I am actually finding it quicker than I anticipated. I set myself 2 weeks per chapter, and the current chapter I am working on is looking as though it will be completed by the end of this week. Also, I am surprisingly finding it quite straight forward to cut down my word count focusing on one chapter at a time. I didn't plan on chopping any from the chapter I am currently working on but just by making my wording more concise and eliminating paragraphs that do not seem as relevant, I have got rid of 2000 words!

Chickpea- Oh yes definitely. I had a rubbish day yesterday... I had a coffee with someone to discuss PhD related stuff, then mustered a tiny paragraph of work in 6 hours. I think learning when to put the work down for a few hours is important. When I have a dip in productivity now I go and do something else, even if its some laundry or washing the dishes :)

How is everyone this week? What are your plans?

Well done to both of you too, you are both nearly there! :)

Don't forget to take some time off too, I think I've burnt myself out in past month, and I'm paying for it now, I'm so exhausted! I should pace myself more ...

I took from Wednesday to Monday off as I was recovering from surgery...I was itching to do something productive.

Hoping to make a start on editing the literature review by the end of this week. This is one of those chapters that need a lot of re writing so I need to stop procrastinating and just dive in to that one.

Wow well done Hugh!

You are nearly there Chickpea :)

I have the whole thesis but I am editing each chapter in order. Some need a lot more work, others need some tweaking. I have just made myself a timetable to stick on my wall to stay on track to have the full draft sent in October, but looks like I will be working a lot of weekends to accomplish it I think :/

Good ol' times new roman.

Yes, I know I am boring!

But I have about 10k to cut too so we are in the same boat! Maybe if we can cut 2k from 5 chapters? That may be more manageable :)

Zutterfly, have you tackled reducing the word count?

I've got to take about 10K and I was wondering if you have any tips?

I have not touched my PhD since Tuesday as I am recovering from surgery, only got home from hospital late on Thursday and have been sleeping and taking painkillers since! So no, I have done nothing about my word counts. The last think I was doing before going into hospital was proof reading my introduction that I recently finished. My next goal is to get my literature review edited and completed in the next 2 or 3 weeks and I am hoping I can cut some from that :)

My CV is also 5 pages long and my cover letter is 1 page long for academic positions. For non-academic positions, I have not yet been asked for a CV, just have to keep filling in those boxes... and then address how I meet the selection criteria, which generally takes up 4 pages.

I may have been doing this incorrectly- I always approached the 'address how you meet the selection criteria' a bit like a cover letter, limiting the length to no longer than a page and half tops. This may have been the wrong approach however? Currently applying to a non-academic position within my university which my entire employment history and research is directly related, so I have done about three pages. I will see how it goes :)

Yep, in fact I'm submitting my thesis only today haha. Just ran out of money basically. And as others have said, filling in applications does get easier with time, it becomes more of a copy paste exercise as most essential and desirable qualities are fundamentally the same. The main thing I found frustrating was how every job has a different system where you have to fill in everything on your CV into boxes and it takes aaaaages to do. What happened to sending off your super professional CV that you worked on for ages? haha

The requirement to input your CV into boxes is the most frustrating part! I tend to tackle that first before coming back a day or two later to write the covering letter so I can calm down!

I've just re-designed my CV! Haha. I've almost completed my first proper application. My cover letter is one page and CV is around 5 pages. Does that sound about right?

Ooh, I'll keep my fingeres crossed for you! My CV is only 2 pages long, I've been told to not go over that. Although I'm not sure if there's more leeway for academic CVs... I also don't think I ever sent off an actual CV so basically, don't listen to me haha. The cover letter sounds about right from my experience, does the job advert not specify a length? From what I remember they usually did and this was generally 1-2 pages.

Hugh, yes academic CVs are longer- typically 5-7 pages. Mine is 5 pages if this reassures you! Also cover letters are preferred to be one page or not much over (page and half tops). The funny thing is, I have worked in careers advice and for councils helping long term unemployed back into work and education. I have successfully secured jobs for many other people, but I can't seem to land one for myself haha :)

Hi Hugh,

In all honesty, I would just apply and make sure you tailor your experience and skills to the post as much as you can! I applied for one and I was in the same boat and this is what I did. I wasn't shortlisted but I felt it was worth applying as after that initial application, I got faster at the others. I have noticed the quality of my supporting statements improve the more I have applied for :) It is a slog but one that we have to go through!
