AHRC & Radio 3 looking for the next generation of arts and humanities researchers to go on air
C

Hi Forumites - The AHRC have asked us to let you know about this scheme, and we thought it might be of interest to some of you currently working on PhDs and post-doctoral projects. It looks quite exciting, and they've said they would like as many people to get involved as possible. Please note the application requirements, as it will only be relevant to some of you. Caz :-)

The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and BBC Radio 3 have joined forces to find the next generation of public intellectuals. We have launched New Generation Thinkers - a pilot talent scheme for emerging academics with a passion for communicating the excitement of modern scholarship to a wider audience and who have an interest in broader cultural debate.

Up to sixty successful applicants, who are currently undertaking research in the UK in the arts or humanities, will have a chance to develop their own programme-making ideas with experienced BBC producers and, of these up to ten will become Radio 3’s resident New Generation Thinkers for 2011. They will benefit from a unique opportunity to develop their own programme for BBC Radio 3 and a chance to appear on air in special New Generation Thinkers debates and sessions during 2011.

To apply for the New Generation Thinkers scheme, you must be:

A UK resident over 18 currently working or studying within one of the disciplinary domains of the AHRC. You will be either:

a. undertaking an AHRC-funded postgraduate or postdoctoral award or working as a postgraduate or postdoctoral member of an AHRC-funded research project. Or

b. in the final year of a PhD within one of the disciplinary domains of the AHRC

c. within eight years of the award of your PhD. Or

d. within six years of your first academic appointment

Judges for the application process will include senior Radio 3 production staff and leading arts and humanities academics.

Potential applicants can find out more at:
http://www.ahrc.ac.uk/FundingOpportunities/Pages/NewGenerationThinkers.aspx

The closing date for this opportunity is December 10th.

Haha, yes, I received this pathetic tale of woe/marvellous investment opportunity. Fear not though, Forumites - I have hunted him down. *strikes dramatic karate-esque pose*

TBH I'm a bit suspicious about the whole thing - why were we both 'promoted' on the same day?

You both have exactly the same score, so it's just a coincidence that you both reached it at the same time! We're like grumpy old ogres here - we'd never go giving out stars willy-nilly! :p

So, has anyone noticed yet.......?

In today's fashion trend the hardest thing is to be creative and open to new ideas. If this means ignoring old adages and overstepping traditional bounds, so be it.

...so I can wear a bright green sweater?

silver jewellery question

Quote From satchi:

I am also tempted to buy Tibetan silver jewelery from ebay!!!!! Has anyone got tibetan silver?

Hi Satchi,

Tibetan silver is not actually real silver. Is is a bit like pewter (mostly made of tin, nickel etc I think) and only has a very small amount of actual silver in it. It tends to be slightly darker in colour than real silver and I've heard that it tarnishes much quicker. It's much cheaper to buy than real silver though, and looks similar enough that it will still look pretty! x

Right, I've been having a think about this and do you have to use references? And can you use quotations?

Hi Wally,

No, you don't need references!! You're welcome to use quotes if you want, but we don't need anything fancy - we just thought it might just be nice to have a few bits of advice on FindAPhD from current PhD people, that's all!

On another note, I'd just like to remind everyone that we didn't start this thread, and that we aren't advertising for free professional content/detailed articles in return for merch. You guys requested some FindAPhD branded stuff and unfortunately we don't have enough to give away free to everyone on the forum (the stuff we have is left-overs from previous events, etc). We therefore just came up with the "mini-article containing advice from current PhD candidates" idea to help us choose who to send the goodies to. We also thought having a bit of advice on the Students section of FindAPhD might be nice for prospective students using the site. Apologies if this has offended anyone - it was certainly not our intention :-(

has anyone seen slumdog millionaire? I kind of think I should watch it because everyone else has, but it looks a bit dull.

I thought it looked a bit boring too and didn't go to see it when it came out. Saw it a couple of months ago on telly though and was pleasantly suprised. It's not amazing or anything, but I thought it was actually very watchable, and certainly worth seeing if you get the chance.

Four Lions is absolutely hilarious! Best film of the year in my opinion. Definitely worth watching (up)

Hi Forumites,

Further to Andy's post, thought I'd sort out a few more details about this impromptu merch-fest! Your musings can be on anything relating to postgrad study/life - it can be an overview of the whole experience, or pick out specific bits of interest. We thought a minimum of 500 words would be good. Here's a few ideas for possible titles if you need some inspiration:

- Writing a thesis
- Perks of a PhD
- How to survive a PhD
- Getting on with your supervisor
- 10 things you should know about...
- Budgeting/money tips for postgrads

Send anything you write to [email protected] (put "Postgrad Forum article" or something useful in the subject line!), and also include your name and address if you'd like to be considered for some free stuff. We will need your real name, but if we put your article up on the site, we can use your forum username on it if you'd prefer. You're welcome to send us more than one article if you're very enthusiastic!

I'll be putting pics of our fabulous merch up on the FindAPhD Twitter account every day this week. I reckon we'll set a closing date of 30th June, but I'll let you know if that changes. There's no pressure at all to enter, but if you fancy a bit of procrastination with the possibility of getting some free FindAPhD stuff, then feel free!

Caz :-)
