favour: paper needed
S

Could i be cheeky and ask if anyone has access to the following paper:

Tice, K. A. & Carlon, D. B. (2011) Can AFLP genome scans detect small islands of differentiation? The case of shell sculpture variation in the periwinkle Echinolittorina hawaiiensis JOURNAL OF EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY 24 (8) 1814-1825

I would appreciate it THIS: (up),-)(up):-)(up),-)8-) much.

So angry at my university for having such crap journal access, so many times i reach a complete dead end, infuriating...anyway, i digress...

thanks a million, million!

has anyone produced a paper with maps?

thanks guys, most helpful indeed! Happy :-)

has anyone produced a paper with maps?
S

Hi everyone, i have a question about maps...

i am trying to write a paper and i need to include a figure of a map of my study sites in the UK (i was doing ecology-type research).  Ideally, i would like to use OS maps, but i'm not sure how it works for copyrights etc - can i just copy & paste a screenshot of the OS maps i want and say where i got it from? OR do i have to get written permission?

The journal's author's instructions are not particularly helpful.

Has anyone produced a paper with maps before? Are there any alternatives to OS maps you could recommend?

Many thanks
Sim

many thanks, couple hours to go. only just started getting nervous. good luck kikuka

No sign of viva date :(
S

i know exactly how you feel. i hate how unversities put you in this position, you're just left dangling making it impossible to move on.

i've got my viva on wednesday after sumbitting nearly 4 months ago. i've struggled to fill the time and time has moved so slowly. i have been job hunting, but that's been rather depressing on the whole, so not sure i would recommend that as a past time.

I'm afraid to say there is nothing you can really do. there is nothing wrong with giving your internal examiners a little nudge every couple of weeks, but i suspect that has already occured to you.

it's not forever though, it will be over...someday

Cheers BB, good tips.

Thanks Chuff.  i think it's touch and go if i'll pass. A lot of my lab work failed, so i had to write great chunks of it up as to say: "if anyone were to repeat this experiment, here is what they should do..."   So the novel contribution to knowledge is open to interpretation. There's some good things in there (i made some nice cartoons), so hopefully the good stuff will outweigh the bad stuff.

There are aspects of my project i do not (and will never) understand (e.g. some of the statistical methods), so if i get asked the wrong questions it could go horribly wrong. That makes me nervous.  I don't really know exactly what to expect, so i'm not sure if i am looking forward or it or not.

That's ever so kind of you to offer your services to make me nervous Chuff. I think i'll be alright, but it's nice to know you're all there for me if i need you ;-) (ha ha ha)

shall keep you posted. Thanks.

my viva is on Wednesday this week. I've done some preparation for it, but i'm struggling to find any motivation to really get stuck into it. i know there is lots i could (should) be doing, but i can't be arsed. i feel like i should be obsessed with it, but i'm struggling to get into that mind set. i'm feeling guilty and worried about being so casual about it...not guilty enough to actually do any work mind...

don't know why i posted this really, just rambling...

Question for lab-based PhD students

100% normal. that's the nature of the beast. i know at least a dozen other students that would agree

Tips for papers reading
S

i assume you're in the sciences. As a general rule: read the last paragraph of the introduction first, this will immdediately tell you exactly what the paper is about. then read the first paragraph of the discussion. this will summarise what was done in the paper and the principal findings...usually. skim everything else and there's nothing wrong with re-reading.

also, be clear about why you're reading a particular paper, that way you can extract exactly what you want from the paper.

paper review on cv?
S

Cheers for the reply KB!

I just saw you other post about being sad: it sounds to me like you've got a great work/life balance going, i envy that. i don't think you're doing anything wrong and should carry on as you are. if you carry on as you are, you'll still be you, not your supervisor!!

paper review on cv?

Hi all,

If i have reviewed a paper for a journal, can i put that on my CV? I'm not sure because peer review is supposed to be anonymous.

thanks
Sim nice but dim :p

Anyone taking longer than three years?
S

I took 4 years (i was only funded for 3.5). i handed in with only 1.5 hours to spare before for my 4 year deadline! I really don't see why you shouldnt take 4 years. If you've been given 4 years to do the best job you can, you might as well use all the time to ensure it is as good as it can be. But that's just me...

just. handed. in.
S

thanks all, i'm still riding the wave!

congrats AmyP!

I have just handed in my thesis! With an hour and a half to spare
:$

It does feel good, i highly recommend it.

i've still got it all to do (prep for viva, job hunt, publish etc), but this does feel like a big milestone, i'm so happy right now.
