PhD interview

Hello.

I have an interview for a computer science PhD studentship with the University of Birmingham. I was wondering if anyone could shed a light on what I can expect (don't need specifics).

Many thanks

Contacting potential supervisors

Hello.

I have emailed several supervisors for advertised PhD studentships yet I have not received a single reply. It's starting to bug me and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and any suggestions for how I can entice them to reply to me.

Need help choosing a PhD.
A

Hi,

I have two options for undergoing a PhD and would like to know people's thoughts to help me make a decision.

I work at a university (where I did my undergraduate) and they have offered me 50% funding for a part time PhD. This can be on any topic of my choosing, which is great. I know exactly what I would like to do for this and have verbal confirmation that my idea is suitable.

However, I have also discovered a fully funded full time PhD in a similar subject area at a university 80 miles away (should be commutable). As this is a studentship the project details are all in place but it does sound very interesting and something I would enjoy.

My problem is, I have just finished a Master's where I was awarded a £10,000 scholarship, and my experience at that university was horrid, to the point I don't think I got value for money. Having had such a bad experience, I am a little cautious about giving up on what I have with where I work.

Is there anyone who could offer their views on what they would do given the options available?

Thanks in advance.

A question about viability
A

Hello.

I have an idea for a PhD topic, which is to see if it is possible to do something with regards to data lakes. The idea is to create an architectural model that solves a specific problem, but there is a very high likelihood that this is not possible.

My question is, if I can show how and why it is not possible to create the output, would it still be considered a viable project at the end? I would hate to go through everything and then lose out because the idea was too ambitious.

If it helps the research question would be along the lines of - Is it possible to create an architectural model to solve (the problem) in data lakes?

I hope this makes sense as I'm trying not to give too many details at the moment as I'm still ironing them all out.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

PhD proposal advice
A

Hello

I am currently studying a MSc Business Intelligence degree and I would like to undergo a PhD once it's completed. As such I'm going to work on my research proposal over Christmas and New Year.

I was wondering if any of you have any advice based on your own experiences. I am currently looking to apply to 2 universities and have the slight advantage that I am a HPL Lecturer at one of them and a current student at the other. So I can speak directly with potential supervisors quite easily.

I have 1 area I am very keen to explore and so far I believe it is original. However, I do have some variations of the topic I could use if needed.

I'd appreciate any advice you can provide to assist me with my proposal.

Thanks in advance.

Where to do a PhD
A

Hello

I'm currently studying a masters in Business Intelligence and want to go on to do a PhD after. The problem I'm having is I'm interested in data science but, because of family, I can't relocate.

My question is, for a full time (hopefully) studentship funded phd, how much time are you required to spend at the university? (Assuming you don't need specialist equipment)

If it's just a case of meeting with the supervisor at regular intervals I could expand my search area. I live in central England so most places a within a few hours drive.
