rejection of a paper is very common, a lot of my freinds got their papers ejected but they were able to puplish it later in other journal. so no worry. and one of my freind already start his job as assistant prof.

Pea, thank you. you really got my point. I agree my writting is not good and full of mistakes. I am trying to improve it. but yes there is more "human" way to criticize. and to be honest accepting criticisim especially if it was not constructive is very hard.
I teach a lab in which I have different levels of students, but I never told anyone of them that he or she is doing bad. I could say you need to work on this more or if you look carefully at that etc..

Well, I know my writting is not good at all. but the way to criticize and to make a considered assessment of the qualities of something is not simply by saying it is bad!! my supervisor did not try to give any advice on my weak points or how to correct things!

correction he said "your writting is bad"

My supervisor shower me with his rude negative comments. for example, instead of advicing me on way to improve my writting he will say " your writting is bab" etc..
annoying me, especially I am trying my best. anyone have such annoying arrogent supervisor? how to deal with them!

Donut, if you are 25 years old and 5 years away from wrinkles, then I am 5 years away from my grave! I am 32

in my first year I worked about 80% of my weekends. now I do not try to do so but sure I read almost every single day. however working in biology sometimes you have to go to the lab in weekend to check on your growing material, change buffer, change temperature etc..
to be honest, I feel excited and motivated the more I get positive results and sometimes I do not want to stop working!! out from work I swim, watch movies, shopping,visiting freinds.

i never make tee or coffee for my supervisor, and he never asked! if he asked I might give him a finger!!but I know one prof in our departments he likes to treat his students as slaves and it makes him look so stuiped. every one else making jok about it. I think students have to stand for themselves or at least keep a minimum line not allowing prof to go through it. especially nasty prof.

oh ya, I wish I can slap my prof on his face. I dream about it to be honest

may be it is lack of social skills, but that does not make you rude! it might makes you shy, isolated or strange, but it should not make you lookin down at other people! I more believe it is personality of individuals the value they have reflect on the behaviour they act.

Do not worry, it is not your problem. it come to personal behaviour and security. some prof are not secure and try to avoid such feeling by dumping other people. it is also the way they have been raised by their parents. I think so! becuse even if the person is really stuiped you should still show respect or tolerate him/her as human. at least this is my understanding of humanity!am I wrong?

hi, what do you mean by viva? is it a defense! here in North America we have comprhensive exam after about 2 years of your ph.d program. then if you fail it you got only one single chance to do repeat it. if you fail that you are out of your ph.d. and I heared few instant about people being kicked out completely from the ph.d because of that, but it is rare. no for defense I did not hear about any one failed that. I think supervisor should not allow the student to go throughe defense if they are not sure!! scary
