MPhill...similar to doctorate?

M

What is the difference of MPhill course with other Master programme? is it similar to doctorate? Any one with infromation on this...

J

An MPhil what you get if you do a research Masters. An MSc (or MA) is what you get if you do a taught Masters.

Sometimes, if you do a doctorate but (whisper it) fail, you may be awarded an MPhil instead of a PhD.

Hai there..JUNO.. thanks 4 the info but the course that being offered to me is Mphil in Prosthodontics(dental specialty) which was claimed as taught programme with dissertation..? not just aresearch prog.. is it widely practiced around the globe?

J

Ooh...that I don't know, sorry. Perhaps someone else here can help you with that

S

i believe in Cambridge and Oxford you get MPhil's instead of MA/MSc by default.
no, i would not say that it is comparable to a doctorate. taught course with dissertation sounds more like any Masters. doctorates are usually not taught courses. except in the US where they often do entail some taught elements, but even then, the majority of the "course" is your thesis which usually takes several years.

might be different for "professional doctorates" and medical doctors, as medical doctors just "borrow" the title of "doctor".

An MPhil can be part taught but should have a research component. The research component can take the form of a dissertation that reanalyses/meta-analyses other material. In any case, it is not equivalent to a doctorate. Sometimes the research component can be expanded and carried on into a PhD.

If it's a taught Masters with a dissertation it may just be equivalent to MA elsewhere. At some Scottish universities MPhil degrees are offered like this, since the title MA is already used for first degrees. You do need to find out more about this MPhil and what it is. If it's a research degree it's a lot more modest than a doctorate, involving far fewer words for the final thesis (how long is "your" MPhil dissertation going to be for example? 15,000 words or 40,000?) and far fewer years.
