Advice on author list of a publication

I

Hello,

So I would just like the opinion of you about this matter:

at the moment a first draft is being completed of a paper which I worked on.
This was a collaboration with some other group within the same University.

On this publication I am now list as the 7th author which I find a bit unfair.

When I started working on this project it was said that I would probably end up as the 2nd or shared 1st author so I worked on this part for a bout 4 months this included parts of the weekends aswell. Now when the paper came I was listed as 7th... While some people that are infront of me 3rd author and 4th only did 1 days worth of work.

These people are from a other group and now I assume that they are there for "political" reasons concerning the other group. So as you know this really made me angry and already said this to my Prof. where he said he would look into this but didn't change anything. So now I requested to meet since I want this to be cleared up. Also they made 1 figure in the paper I believe while I didn't directly work on the paper (only the 1st author did and the prof. mostly), but the data I recorded is presented in 5 out of the 8 figures in the paper.

Thus am I being wrong here? Also I got the feeling the 1st author doesn't like me too much being that in the end of my 2nd year I had 6 papers published of which 2 first authors while he is finishing his phd with 1 paper published so far and I hear him often say to me that I shouldn't complain because I got so many papers already. So am I being lets say a bit too greedy and should I just drop this?

T

I'm not sure how much the author position matters, other than being first or last, to be honest.

If you are not going to be first author then it's probably not worth the hassle and damage to your professional relationships by querying it. You were right to raise it with your prof first I think, but if nothing changes, it's probably just better to leave it.
