I have got a 2.1 in biomedical sciences from a good university but it seems that I am immediatley disregarded because of my degree. I know my cv is ok and was wondering if anyone had any advice to help me get a PhD.Also does anyone know of any PhD in biosciences in the North East area?

Hi Sarah, my friend had a 2:1 in Biomedical Sciences and had no problems finding a PhD studentship (admittedly this was in a biomedical field). Has anyone actually said that they would not consider your application because of your degree subject? What type of PhD are you looking for?

G

In an interview it was said that my degree was not of the same value of say a biochem degree!

If you are interested in biomedial aspects there are some groups with funding from EC proyects in Sapin, in the Universidad Politecnica d Valencia, but if you are interestind in computing image 2D and 3D I am looking for POSTDOC but also form some PHD students. gperis@upv.es

Maybe it would help if you listed in your CV the modules/topics you studied in your degree, especially Honours year - this might give them an idea of what skillls and knowledge you have - maybe your modules are similar to those that studied Biochem.

Hi Sarah, If they were specifically looking for someone with a biochemistry degree then I can see how you might have been disadvantaged. Strange though that they called you for interview if this was a problem for them? Don't be too worried, a biomed science degree will be very suitable for entry to many PhD studentships, good luck with your future applications.

My first degree is in microbiology and MSc in biomedsci. I start my PhD this autumn in a field related to this. Perhaps apply for a PhD related to your project. If you are interested in biochem mention the units done at uni in the cv.Dont worry about it, just keep trying and you will get there. If this fails get a research assis. job; that looks great on a cv.
