Are you a geek?

A

Do you see yourself as being a geek? How would you define the word geek?

S

I think some people see me as a geek, just on the grounds that I'm a PhD student. I don't really see myself as a geek, and really don't think anyone else is a geek either, as we all do things we enjoy, but some people don't.

For example, someone may enjoy Chess, but some people may see that as a geek thing to do. But the people that call that person a geek may enjoy reading up on history, or plane spotting etc. So, I think that everyone is different, and enjoys different things.

Same as I enjoy doing a PhD, but I also enjoy many more popular things as well. Does that mean I'm a geek? thats for others to decide, and I don't care what they think either way to be honest as I'm doing what I enjoy

Has anyone seen that (terrible) programme "Beauty and the Geek" on Ch.4? Beautiful women are coupled with geeky blokes (defined as geeky on the basis that they are very intelligent but socially inept), and they have to complete challenges to win some cash. Can you believe one of the women actually said "2" to the question "How many brains has a monkey got?"!!!!

E

why the question?

M

I'm with DanB on this one. Geek and nerd are not the same thing. Geek is the new cool.

Definitions of 'Geek' (and how it relates to 'Nerd' - some disagreement about this).

Does looking this up make me the ultimate Geek?

W

For a long time I resisted being pidgeon-holed as a geek, then I turned two and it became clear. I am a geek and proud of it!

-Why the question?

Well several people in my lab see them selves as geeks and are proud of it. One even has a private subscription for Science (although we have a subscription for the centre and the journal is in the coffee room), others download nature news onto their iPOD and listen to that on the way in. There's almost a competition in nerdiness going on .... especially amongst the girls……and I was just wondering when being a nerd came into fashion. “Nerd” doesn't seem to have a negative image anymore- or does it? Is science the new sexy? Brains instead of (improved) boobs? On the other hand- calling them a nerd is a compliment, saying they dress like a nerd would be an insult. Does anyone else own a personal subscription to Science/Nature/Cell ….. what kind of nerdy things do you do?

P

Geeky Chic is the new black.

S

The only subscription I am tempted by is 'new scientist' but even then i don't really read that much of it, so subscribing probably isn't worth it.

Listening to nature on the ipod!! that is a bit too much.

H

Why cant you have brains and boobs?

A

Mann, now they are swapping radioactiv ATP for tea bags!

S

I much prefer girls with brains as they are just boring to speak to otherwise. But having fun boobs to play with can compensate for that temporarily.

If they have both, then everyones happy

H

Thanks for clearing that up Stu :-|

S

Thats how I view new scientist, and I do buy it often, but I don't really read all the articles, just the general interest ones (and most of the magazine is unrelated to my field of research anyway).

What other words do people use for Boobs??

I'll start you off with a couple- knockers, tits, baps and top-bollocks
