Hi, i really want to do a phD but im concerned about spending the rest of my life stuck in a lab...are there any phD's that are field work based? What are these like?
There's a lot of Environmental Biology PhD's around... and these are often supplemented with a CASE stipend of £3000 too. Then there's aquatic/marine biology projects, plant based projects which may involve field/glasshouse work, ecology, etc.
If you want fieldwork then an environmental/ecological PhD is the way to go, although there are animal projects available at the vet school in london where you can work with livestock etc. My PhD is about molecular markers and I get a lot of fieldwork to collect my samples.
