Bit of a panic about publishing...

K

Ok, so today I had one of many frequent panic attacks. How many articles should we as PhD students have published or at least submitted before finishing? I'm 3 months into writing up and don't have anything on my plate as of yet. One of my friend's passed her viva and is looking for a job but hasn't found anything yet. She thinks its because she hasn't published anything. Is this something to panic about? What do you all think?

Hi Kremowka,

from previous postings I get the impression that it is nothing to worry about.

As always, obviously it would be good to be able to publish your work, yet worrying about it will not change anything and I understand that there are plenty of people finishing a PhD without publications.

I'd say kremowka, don't beat yourself about it. You're still quite early into your research. You've got plenty of time to do publications as time goes by.

The advice I got from a young lecturer was that you don't need publications to do a PhD or apply for postdocs.

Thank you all for the responses!
