BSc Grades

G

I'm nearly finished my MSc and in the process of applying to PhDs. Im doing very well in my MSc but did not do as well in my BSc (got pass in honours course)for a number of reasons. Im now worried that this mark will go against me when I apply as most places seem to want 2.1. (which I think is for funding purposes as well as ability) Or will my MSc just cancel this out???

G

yes. most of the univs ask their applicants being above 2:1 holders in their postgard degeree. I am sorry to let you know that it's gonna be very hard for you if you are gonna get a place with a score below it. But sometimes it depends on your proposal. EG. an Undergrad /student CAN get an offer or admission if his'her proposal is really good. So don't worry too much and concentrate to your proposal. You ARE entitled to be offered a place even if your undergrad resualt is not quite satisfying

It will be difficult without at least a 2(ii) and a Masters. Start by asking advice from your MSc tutors, who will know what's going on in your subject area and may know of opportunities for which you may qualify.

thanks for getting back to me.
should probably have mentioned that im in IRL, so not sure if the same rules apply. this proposal that u mentioned - i presume this is if u have an idea for a project yourself and u require a supervisor and funding? have no intention of doing that ! just intending on asking researchers within depts what they have going and send in my cv. actually another thing im confused about- my BSc grade was 50% which is pass in some places and 2.2 in others.. should i just stick down my percentage ?

See our PhD's explained section for information and links on degree equivalence. It may well be that your grade is good enough. Don't worry about a research proposal unless you're thinking of self funding or you're asked for one.
