Calling all PhD students!!! I need advice please

K

I need advice please,

I want to apply for a PhD and have little or no support. Can you answer questions I have please,

Do they give you training in a PhD?
ie: I am finishing a degree in forensic science and have very good knowledge of instrumentation but want to apply for a PhD in atmospheric chemistry, although i do not have background in the 'atmospheric' bit.

UCL offers a four year PhD for a range of analytical science topics and give training. Normally you have to pay for the first year, as its like a masters? but it does not say anything about it? Is anyone on this course?

Are you at a massive disadvantage without a masters, how hard is it to get in with a 2:1 or 1st degree?

Are the supervisers human, do they expect you not to know everything about the PhD?

and finally,

What is PhD life like? How full on is it? How many days do you do a week can you work part time too?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just so stressed by the whole thing.

hi kelly
yes they give training in a phd (but first u need to convince your potential supervisor/uni that you can do a phd in something of which u dont have background)

Dont know about UCL, sorry.

Without MSc is not a massive disadvantage. If you have an excellent CGPA for your 1st degree, should be ok.

Supervisors are usually human.

Phd life is like a christmas tree:
stars, angels, presents you like, presents you don't like, lights, trimmings, nettles (!)

I do like 6 days a week, and yes we can work part time.
And we all get stressed.

good luck!
