Can I pick my own research topic

G

I am looking for a PhD in some aspect of molecular medicine. I did a very good BSc project and would like to follow on from this. However, I have moved back down South and am looking for a PhD in this area. Do you think I could negotiate a research project in my research area with a suitable supervisor - or do I just do what they want to research? I am very keen to pursue my interest!

You need to find a supervisor who is an expert in the area you are interested in. If you want funding for your project an academic will have to apply for it.

You'll need to write a detailed thesis proposal explaining the scientific questions you want to answer, why, how you'll go about it, methods, etc. Also, I'd say it's a difficult enough task to find a suitable supervisor and funding without confining yourself to "the South", so be prepared to relocate. Also, you're probably too late to secure funding for your own project proposal for this academic year (05/06).
