I have a PhD and have spent the last few years at home bringing up my children.

I'd like to kickstart my career again and would consider doing an EngD in a slightly different field to my previous one.

Would this be possible or would there be issues with funding etc?

I'm not sure about the funding issue but I would recommend talking to a careers advisor. Why do you think that doing an EngD would be a better way of kick-starting your career than getting a job or, if you need to transition to another field, doing a masters?

I wouldn't do this without doing a lot of homework about the possible limitations - ultimately it might harm your career prospects.

Sorry, I've realised that sounded a bit negative. What I'm trying to say is there might be alternative ways of meeting your goal without the necessity of doing another doctorate. It really depends on what your long term goals are.

Thanks Hazeyjane. It's just something that I've only just considered. I'd prefer a fellowship/ job but feel like after so many years out that I'd need to start from scratch or would be expected to. I was just wondering if it was an option, it's not something I've set my sights on.

No problems, it wasn't negative to me. I'm just trying to get some sort of a plan together and obviously will see a career advisor but just trying to see what all the options are. Thanks.
