I am looking to apply to Cambridge to do a PhD in Mathematics in the near future. I was wondering how Cambridge look at degrees from other univeristies - it says in the prospectus that they require a first class degree, but how do they look at first class degrees from different universities? Do they consider some universities more favourable than others? My undergraduate degree will be from Cardiff.

Well I can't speak for Mathematics but in my experience they certainly wouldn't be worried about a first from Cardiff; I would be very suprised if it barred you on that basis alone.

I had the feeling they were selecting more on the basis of your references and social involvements; I got accepted and I don't have a first and it is from a foreign unknown university as well.
