Cost of living in The Netherlands

G

Hi
i would like to apply to do a phd in the netherlands(Utrecht). can some one tell me what the general cost of living is there. Is an 18,000 euro per year fellowship enough or do i need to apply for other funding. thanks

G

Hi Tindo,
I am from the Netherlands and I live in Utrecht. Housing is very often arranged for foreign PhD's and I guess you will pay about 300 euro's rent a month here.
I shouldn't worry about the 18000 euro/year, you can still have enough money to spend it on other things than living!

G

this 18000 Euro/year is gross? do you know how tax is big in NL?

G

Hi. A PhD in the Netherlands amounts to about 1100 euros a month (after taxes). PhD studentship funding is regulated by the government so everyone gets paid the same. The 4th zear, your salary will increase. As ´small black flower´had said... you should be able to find an apartment for 300-500 euros a month, depending on location and size. Good luck!

G

Thanks for the infor. Monic i am not sure whether this is the gross or not. Is a scholarship taxed as well in NL?

G

living cost is 500 euro, and how many euro I will spending on foods, cinema etc? somebody knows?

G

18,000 is plenty

G

For new BMW this 18000 could be not enought:) but for simple life, should be okey

G

Is the funding that is given to PhD students taxed or not? and can the student loan company start to claim if it is above 17000 pound

G

If it's a bursary, it won't be taxed. If you are employed (working as a research assistant for example) during your PhD, then you would pay tax. Not sure about the student loan issue but (unfortunately!) there aren't too many PhD students receiving £17K per year.

Accomodation can be a lot more expensive in Utrecht if you 're not lucky. I'm paying 415 per month. Anyway, 18.000 are plenty, don't worry. And if its a scholarship, then you won't have to pay any taxes. I am thinking of starting a PhD myself here. Can someone tell me what would be the taxes in 30.000 euros per year? Or a rough percentage maybe? I really have no idea. Thanks
