deep depressed

G

Hi, I'm an 8th month PhD student. At this moment, I'm fed up with the environment I'm working in. I do not like how my boss behaves. He often said the words that hurts me. I tried several time to be patient and cope with it. But, I dont think I can stand anymore. And this affects my every day motivation of working.

I'm forced to do a task I dont like, just because it's from a company that funds the project. I dont have flexibility either to explore what I wanna do, I have to stick to prev work in my group. Now, I'm not sure whether I should continue my PhD in this group. I'm thinking of quiting my PhD and find other place. I still want to do a PhD, coz I love doing work in academic area and research. Need ur opinion, what should I do at this stage? I am feeling very low now.

Keep a good relationship with your supervisor. His reference will be important for the future.

If its the environment and supervisor screwing you, then maybe a change would be a positive thing.

Maybe you can get an MPhil and then move on.

Stick with it - it is only three years ( I know that sounds like a lot) - look at a PhD as the start of an academic career - once you have finished you will be free to move on.

Dont listen to people like Pep, althogh well intentioned, in life u must stick up for yourself and stand up against anyone who treats you badly. If your boss uses words that hurt you then this is legally known and bullying and harassment. The threat of a formal complaint to the police will stop him/her dead in their tracks. Don't let your emotions get to you. Take up a sport that involves vigorous exercise. You'll soon find you can cope much better with everything. Don't allow others to control your emotions.
