I have BA with honours in Classical archaeology and currently doing Masters in Cultural Heritage (course work) both in Australia. I am planning on doing my PhD in Germany as I have found a few experts on the topic I am interested in. I still have a problem of how to approach the whole thing - was wondering if anyone would be able to help me.

- is it possible to do your research in English (is that something that you discuss with your potential supervisor or with the faculty?)

- should you first contact potential supervisor and discuss possibilities of doing PhD or should you apply to the chosen university and than nominate supervisor (I always thought the first one would be more logical but I'm not sure)

If anyone is able to help me with this I would be very grateful.

it would would be helpful if you would be able to speak some German.

I am doing my research in Germany, a lot of the papers are in English, yet not all/ I think you can pick up reading the stuff relatively quickly, yet writing in German in hard (I still make a lot of mistakes in the grammar).

I think you should negotiate that you can write in English.

thanks for your reply. I am hoping to do my research in english. I do speak a bit of german but not good enough to write my research in it. I am hoping that they will allow me to do it in english. What aarea are you doing your PhD in?

was it hard to get in - I know this depends on individual supervisors and faculties...but just in general ...

I am looking a quality in medical care.
I am self funding. I knew someone at the university and contacted her, as such this was not difficult. I have no experience regarding the offical route, if funding is involved it problably will be more formal. As such I think it may help if you got a contact.

I find frustrating that everything takes a long time, yet understand this is the same in the UK or other countries!

yeah I know it takes time that's why I have started researching it now even thought i want to start my PhD at the end of next year :D

I'm not too worried about the funding, even if I don't get any I should be fine I am just freaking out that I won't be able to find a supervisor that will be interested in my topic...but that is typical of me

I am doing my PhD in the UK. I am an international student and English is not my mother tongue. Do u really think i would ask the UNI or my supervisors to write my thesis in my own language??
So, please, if you don't even know any basic German words,well, don't apply for the PhD. How can u even stay in a country for 3 years if you don't speak the language properly?

you don;'t have to be rude about it - i already am studying in english which is not my first language. I have met people who are doing their PhD in english in Germany as it is not uncommon (If you check their websites you would see that that it says that they offer phd in english)

not sure how it is with your degree but all i care about is to find a good supervisor and germany has people who specialise in what i am interested in.

secondly i do speak a bit of german however not enough in order to complete my phd.

Pulse is right. Its not uncommom in MANY non English speaking countries for students to produce their thesis in English. Suchlike crops up on here a fair bit

just to let you know: I will write my thesis in English even though I am based in Germany. You are right, it is not uncommon to do this in Germany.

thanks for asking:) I've managed to find a few potential supervisors - luckily many German scholars are interested in area that I would like to explore in my PhD. I have spoken to my honours supervisor and she is more than happy to write an introduction letter before I contact them. I am just waiting to finish with my MA work (October is the worse month!) and than I'll start chasing it.

I am quite confident that it will go well.

actually im in also a big problem...well im going to finish my MBBS(MD) from Romania and really wish to stay in Europe ...so just looking from long time Phd in germany, holland, switzerland or Etc ...but cant find it..so ple guys help littile bit..
before i was thinking to do Postgraduation in Orthopedic surgery or cardiaology, Urology or etc...but in euro its too hard to get it coz of there language..
